My understanding is that production slots are specific to sub-model, either 28i or 35i. Dealers generally don't give away slots or allow them to lapse; they just configure the options generically at low total cost for Priority 2 production to arrive as unsold inventory. A customer who orders a specific configuration is assigned to a specific slot of sub-model production which then changes from Priority 2 to Priority 1 and reconfigured to the customer's option requirements. A customer who subsequently changes a Priority 1 custom order from 28i to 35i or the reverse must be reassigned to a different production slot which may be earlier or later than the initially assigned slot. The change causes the slot for the "changed from" sub-model to fall to Priority 2 and the dealer will reconfigure to some generic option set. I believe that Priority 1 orders are scheduled for production before Priority 2 orders of the same sub-model. The same priority deprecation would apply to the production slot of a customer who completely cancels an order. Fewer customers order 35is than 28is and customers with production slots probably decide more frequently to upgrade than downgrade. This will churn the production dates of specific orders but have little effect on the overall production from the factory's point of view.

We initially drove the F30 with the n20, then the X3 with the n52 followed by a 35i M sport, all in the same day. From there we drove the GLK, FX and EX, Q5 2.0T, Range Rover Evoque and the Volvo XC60 R-Design, along with the Forester and Outback (what the heck, big Subaru fans). The Volvo was a pretty close second but I couldn't get past the torque steer and nanny safety features. But the X3 with the N55 just haunted me throughout the whole process, even after we had decided on the n20 which, again, I thought was just an outstanding engine. Now I just have to black out the grill, debadge and decide on a tune. Anybody find staggered wheels yet for these F25s? btw the 35i gets better mileage than our 328ix and will clobber it from a dead stop. Ok, it might not get better mileage the way I drive it...we have averaged 17.8mpg over the life of our 3 series lol. |

I don't know if it's the same in the States, but my Dealer explained me that each of them get production slots and on each slot they have determined number of cars. For example with the X3, my dealer gets (10) 28i and only (4) 35i on each production slot.

Tipsy, I too drove all of the cars you listed but substituted the x1 for the f30 then added the kia sportage sx to the mix.
I agree the xc60 was close in performance but to me the kia came 2nd. In the end we selected the n55 not for the performance but for the features that were only available with 35i. Quote:

I ordered a 2013 35i (Space gray metallic, Black Nevada leather, Fineline wave wood, Sports activity package, Cold weather package, Dynamic handling package, Premium package, Premium sound, Tech package, BMW apps) on March 10th. The production date was April 4th, and it got to the dealer in NJ on April 13th. I'm taking delivery on the 17th . Production only took a couple of days. The longest part was "finishing touches" while it was "being transported to the port of exit". I'm still waiting for the production video.

My X3 shows "production begins" online as of this AM. Should I expect delivery by end of month in eastern PA? Phone number still says "no confirmed production date." This is so much easier then waiting for an E90!

I did the same thing, lol!
I ordered the 28i on 3/31 and then changed the order on 4/2. My 35i arrived at my dealer on 4/16. I pick the car up on 4/19, after I get my windows tinted. I was surprised to see how quick the car was built upon the initial order... Cheers, BB Quote:

My in laws were expected mid April production and they are taking delivery today.. Went into production first week in April and got to dealership Saturday. By the time they logged in to check status, the car was already in NY (in part because they were slow checking email and didn't see the message from the salesman telling them it would be first week not mid April).

Probably somewhere in the middle.
I ordered: M Sport Pkg, Cold Weather Pkg, Premium Sound Pkg, tinted windows. White exterior w/beige leatherette. I'm a fan of leatherette, due to the durability. I use seat covers, b/c leather makes me sweat in the hot summer months... |

Any idea how long it takes before they move to production from order documented stats. My 2013 X3 28i has been sitting in documented status for almost 3 weeks. It was supposed to be in an existing dealer production slot. Did they have to go out and find and cut a tree for the wood trim?

I placed my order on 4/7 with production date of 4/17. Called my CA today and he told me that it production started a day or two ago and got me a VIN. 1 800 number still states no production date and BMW site the same.
Expecting delivery in one to two weeks. |

All orders are assigned to existing dealer production slots which are known far into the future. Large dealerships have more slots allocated to them than small dealerships. 35i and 28i slots are separate. Dealers fill slots with generic configurations and modify them as they take orders from customers. Therefore, an existing slot could be anytime in the future. When you sign your sales order, it should show an approximate delivery date. Then within a very few days after you sign the order, the CA should give you a printed order confirmation from the BMW producction system showing your production number, a status code, and exact configuration.

In my case, BMW site and phone tracking is at least 2 days behind. CA gave me my VIN two days ago and it finally showed today on web site.
I just don't understand why phone tracking states production to end 4/27. That's 10 days since the start date. Do they include delivery time to dealer in this estimate? |
