Alternator whine or turbo whistle?

Hi all -

I haven't posted in awhile. I’m hoping someone can offer insight. My 35i M Sport makes a whining sound with quick stabs of the accelerator. It’s similar to alternator whine. It could be coming from the turbo but since this is my first turbo BMW I have no reference. Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure I have the same noise on my 35i and I believe it to be either turbo spin or the blowoff valve.

It would be the wastegate opening up everytime you let your foot off the pedal or your x3 changes gears.

Now that you know... have fun with it
