Buy now or wait for 2013 models
Well I have waited this long so far and understand that the 2012 model year will end in March. Does it make sense to wait until then to order or order before the end of the year? I also understand there is a price increase coming in January. There could also be another increase for the 2013 models. I'm looking at the 35i models. any thoughts on this? If I order now and pick up in late January then I only get 2-3 months of a 2012 model. How will this affect resale?

Makes no sense. Can anyone even get 2012 models yet? 2014 will probably be a face lift so that would be the only year that would make sense to wait for.

Expect a complete engine line-up revision and new chassis in 2016. You should definitely wait until 2017 so you don't have any "first-year teething problems". But, of course the 2018's may even be better. Decisions, decisions!!

Life's Short...
Life is short, go for the 2012. There will always be upgrades, improvements, price increases, better color options, larger wheels, new options, etc. Go for it!

The 2012s are sweet and they just came out recently. Go for it. That is, unless you are in absolutely no hurry and really have your heart set on a 28i, in which case it might make sense to wait for the N20 engine offering -- it appears to be a real winner according to new 3 series video reviews.

I've seen a few 2012 328i reviews with the new turbo 4... it might be a better choice waiting for that engine than either of the current offerings. Don't know if/when the turbo 4 is going to be available in the x3 though.

Its not confirmed that the n20 will be in the 2013 28i models for NA, thus, I don't think there will be much difference whether you choose 2012 or 2013. Furthermore, you probably wont benefit much between the two as both are mated to a 8spd gear box which contributes largely to the fuel economy of the X3s.

That's great news and perfect timing for me.
I test drove the X1 with the N20 engine and was very impressed. The X3 weighs 385 lbs more than the X1 so I don't know how much impact that'll have on performance. |

Strictly speaking that's correct, however the chances of them maintaining production of the N20 and N52 28i at the same are diminishingly miniscule in my opinion. Notice that with the X1 28i, Z4 28i, 328i sedan, and 528i the N20 replaced the N52 completely in all markets.

There's really no way of telling until released by BMW Group and/or updated internally on BMW's system. I guess we'll wait and see. P.S the N20 is very impressive. Loved driving the X1 for the few months that I had it.

Wait.
2013 is not that far off. Then wait again, as 2014 will be getting close by then. Looking at the big picture, they will start releasing teasers of the replacement model in about late 2015, which will only be a small wait until they are released for sale in 2017. So just keep waiting. Save your money. Buy a used ford in the meantime. If only I could follow my own advice.

They're already filling March production slots now, can't imagine it would be too hard to wait a month for an April production slot and get a 2013.

The 2010 model year for the E82 was only a few months. The 2011 model started production in Feb of 2010 when they switched from the N54 to the N55 and added the DCT option. We could see the same thing happen here if they switch the N52 out for the N20 in the 28i for the NA market.

Things keep changing, priorities change, models change, money position change, likings change. If I am going to lease a new car, I go for the best available choice for my needs and pocket and don't guess what will happen to the models tomorrow. I go fur fun right now and know that if I lease now, I will have a chance to go for another car in 36 months so why to delay and postpone my decisions.
If I want to own a car for 10 plus years, then I need to think 10 times before deciding as I'm locking my money and choices for long and even in this case I don't want to wait for over six months as that will be never ending otherwise. I always view two options: my next car and my future car. This makes life easier. |
