Contrary to the old school of thinking, oil temperature is by far the best indication of engine temp/health. Also it is not understood by many that oil cools the engine as much as coolant does. Therefore there is no good reason to have a coolant temperature gauge.

Ya, I'm old school thinking. Is this why modern engines have oil squirters that point on the bottom of the Pistons

They are for lubricating the small ends/gudgeon pins on the conrods as well as taking away some heat from the underside of the pistons.
