Any issue with changing your own oil WHILE still in warranty?

I have DIY'd all my cars, especially in the last 5+ years from owning my E36, to E46 and E39.

My 2017 X3 is a CPO, and still under factory warranty until end of February, 2021.

My question, is there any issue with me changing the oil myself? Or doing any other routine maintenance for that matter when it comes to the warranty? The car has 0w20 in it from when I bought it at BMW, which is a bit thin for our summers here in CA, and I am planning on switching to LL-01 Liqui Moly 5w30.

I was never a fan of BMW's 10k mile OCI. So even though they changed oil in the car every 10k miles while under warranty, I changed it myself at 5k intervals. I never reset the oil change reminder and never mentioned anything to the dealership about my own DIY work. I'm out from under warranty and am still on a 5k-6k mile OCI.

+1 exactly and the important thing to remember is to NOT reset the service indicator, otherwise I have heard of cases where BMW refused to change the oil for free as part of your warranty.

Fair enough. That's something I would probably do too.

I am fairly certain that the free maintenance is done after 3 years. Now I have to pay for it. But I don't want to a. Go by BMWs schedule, b. Put 0w20 in the car and pay for an oil change.

What I want to know is, does doing the maintenance, an keeping records, somehow change the warranty since I will not be taking it in for routine maintenance?

No, keep a log and receipts.

Agreed! I asked this before I purchased my CPO X3 as well. I was told that I'm free to do my own maintenance, but they warned to keep good records to keep the warranty. Just make note of the model number of oil filters used and use an LL-01 oil. I also switched to Liqui Moly

I hope that helps!

Exactly, CPO warranty or OEM warranty, here in the US you are free to do your own maintenance and repairs without a negative impact to your warranty. .. . but, if you have an issue that warranty should cover and BMW goes through their records and don't see where you have had your regular maintenance done, oil changes, etc, you will have to prove to them that you did in fact do it and that you used BMW specified parts.
I do my own oil changes too, I buy the oil and filter from my BMW parts department and keep all the receipts for the BMW specified change intervals. When I change the oil earlier than their specified intervals, I buy the oil where ever I can get it. Never had an issue.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input.

Regarding filters, is MANN still the one to go with? This is the one I got for sDrive.

That's just fine and mostly what I end up using too.

I actually went so far as to use my GoPro to video me doing the entire oil change when I did them after getting out of the 4 year maintenance plan but not yet out of the 7 year/70k mile extended warranty for other items. Mainly the timing chain issue for the N20's in the 2013 models.

I used Mann filters each time and LL-01 certified oil. I would video everything. Showed the mileage on the dash, the date on my cell phone and on my DirecTV, the oil and filter used, and I would run it continuously showing me draining the oil and refilling along with changing the filter so there was no doubt it was done and that it was done correctly. Still have those video files on my laptop somewhere.

That definitely gives you 100% coverage in the event something would have been denied because of what you did.

I changed it with BMW Oil and Filter after my 3 years of maintenance plan, purchased from same dealership as I purchased my X3.

I keep receipt and wrote date and mileage on the receipt so I have proof.
