2009 X3 Starting Issues

Hi,

I have an 09 X3 3.0l drive and as of late it has been getting harder and harder to start. Long turn overs and at times, a delay when you turn the key before it attempts to turnover (1-2 seconds)

Yesterday, it died .. it will not turn over at all, even with a boost.

I JUST replaced the battery as I thought that was the issue ... apparently not.

Now, when I turn the key I hear a clicking which sounds like it is coming from in the dash behind the cluster .. louder there than in the engine bay. It is not attempting to turn over at all. I had to have it towed home yesterday.

So while a starter replacement is likely imminent, I am wondering if there is anything else I should check first ? IS there a relay that I could check/replace? Any other type of switch or something ?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

*NOTE* - I just realized I posted this very similar thread a while back, so sorry for the duplication. If anyone has anything else, I'm all for it.

Can someone tell me where to locate the braided ground wire on this thing ?

It is not obvious by looking, or I'm simply blind

Found it (Behind front passenger wheel)

Corroded as hell, almost broken in half .. replaced it with a 4 gauge one (all I could find local), and the truck started up like brand new !

$14.00 and Im back in action.

So now to return the starter, bolts and gaskets !

great to hear you solved the issue the easy and cheap way, My wife drives a 2009 X3 and I wish not to replace the starter on her X3, I already did on my son's 2007 328i and is a PITA !

Any chance you could provide a pic of where the ground wire is located?

Thanks!
