Factory roof rails installed by dealer

Just a heads up for anyone with a bare roof looking to have the dealer add rails. I had it done today and the total cost was $1247.

I could have saved some money going third party with the rails, but since the car is brand new and the install is complicated, I really wanted my dealer to own it so that if I run into any issues a year from now they'll be responsible for both the parts and the install.

So, $1247 later, here's the bill and parts list. Comically, my 430XI loaner car and the M2 I sat in while waiting for them to bring my car around both had the super-handy flip-up ports on the roof for installing a rack. I don't know why these weren't included on my X4 since it's an SUV, but they certainly would have made a lot more sense there than they do on an M2...

Anyhow, here's the scoop for those looking to see what it'll run you from the dealer.

I have been wanting to do this. My guess is this price doesn't include racks? Did you do any research on racks and attachments? If you don't mind can you post pictures.

My roof is bare no holes no rails nothing. I got parts quote of around $800 to get rails. Then rack(300) and roof rack(300-500). And this is just parts. High cost put me off.

If you get am $800 parts quote, they are gouging you. $663 was my cost straight from the parts counter at my dealership. My car was bare too, same as yours. The $1247 was everything installed, but just the rails, no racks.

Fortunately I was able to 100% re-use the Yakima setup that I had on my previous car (a 328xi ). I got it all from Amazon, rough prices:

Ridgeline Towers: $150
Clips for the rails: $90
Crossbars: $120
Windshield: $100
Snowboard rack: $120

Here's a pic, not the most detailed but it's what I have handy:
