coolant temp reading

Have an 12 X3 35i, and have noticed for the last 3k miles sometimes my temperature climbs to 240 briefly but then backs down to around 200. This happened on a 2000 mile trip from TX to DC and have noticed it driving on the highway mostly. is this normal ?

Thanks

Temp gauge indicates oil temp not coolant temp.

From the Manual:

Engine oil temperature
Cold engine: the pointer is at the low temperature end. Drive at moderate engine and vehicle speeds.
Normal operating temperature: the pointer is in the middle or in the left half of the temperature display.
Hot engine: the pointer is at the high end of the temperature range. A Check Control message is also displayed.
