Odd start-stop & Auto-hold issue

I have this strange issue with my car!

X3, 2.0D auto.
Start-stop activated
Auto-hold activated

I drive up to a traffic light and come to a stop
The auto hold light goes on
I release the brake pedal
engine shuts down

and then, approximately 1 second after the engine shutting down I feel a hick up in the car, almost like 1 of the cylinders makes an extra stroke.
It feels like a little nudge, or like somebody is lying under de car and giving it a kick (yes this sounds strange but it is supposed to give you an idea of how it feels).

Does this sound familiar to anybody? It s new for the dealership.

I haven't felt it before. It is since the day that I switched my winter wheels for the summer wheels, but i cannot see why that should be related.

Is it engine or more like a physical braking sensation? if the latter my Q5 also does this and the X3 I test drove was the same, I think its the Hill Hold System switching over from the wheel brakes (for a temporary hold) to the handbrake (for a longer one). The system can use both depending on situation.

Dunno if this helps at all . . . I use Auto Hold regularly, don't have Auto Stop, have the 35i, and have never experienced what you described. Maybe that suggests it relates to Auto Stop or diesel?

I use auto stop and auto hold all the time.

Auto Stop
I control whether I want the auto stop to kick in by adding a slightly higher pressure on the break pedal just before coming to a complete stop (This is described in the manual).

Auto Hold
Sometimes if I am on a slight incline (Down or Up), and the auto hold kicks in as expected, when I release the break pedal the car lurches slightly with a loud clunk, this is because the release of the foot break and switch to the auto hold moves the car lightly between the foot brake to hold brake. I only get this every now and then.

well... that's the difficult part. The issue only happens on auto-hold and never when I keep my foot on the brake pedal.

I wouldn't bother much about it if it wasn't so bloody annoying.

The engineer from the dealership said that it felt like there was some tension in the power train that was released (this is very difficult to translate for a non-native speaker!).

Only last week I was about to take my F25 to the stealer due to a related 'noise' problem but it clear its self the next day; with or without autohold enabled I had a permenant scraping or binding noise from the rear. It was something to do with the parking or autohold brakes. The noise made everyone in the street whom you passed, to look at the car. For 1 week the 'noise'/'binding' has not returned so I did not go to the dealer.

Received a call from the dealer yesterday. The answer he got from BMW Netherlands was "these systems are not supposed to be used simultaneously". I believe that's not true (to put it mildly).

They also said that the issue is tension in the power train that's released when the hand brake kicks in.

Nevertheless it's still annoying me so I've asked them to test it on another 2.0D auto because i'm 100% sure the phenomenon didn't occur with my 307 wheels. I've paid 75K for this car and it should be perfect.

6 months later. A specialist from BMW Netherlands has driven the car and admitted that it's not standard behaviour of the car.

Believe it or not: they loaded new software and the issue is solved!

If they weren't meant to be used simultaneously than they would set it up that way. The dealer told me that there are 100 different occurrences that had to come together for the auto-stop to engage. I would think that they would set up the software appropriately if they didn't want them to be used together.

Only having driven my F25 for about 150 miles in still trying to work out the logic.

I use auto hold for start stop town driving and auto stop start seems to kick in whenever it feels like it.

I wish the car would say why the Stop/Start hasn't kicked in (I just get a line through the Stop/Start Symbol).
My X3 stop start only works after a few minutes driving. The engine restarts if you turn the steering wheel OR you push the brake pedal hard OR you press the override button next to the Start button.
I understand having the aircon on can disable Stop/Start. Does the X3 need the engine for Air-Con, or is it electronic?

The air conditioning continues to work when the auto stop kicks the engine off but on a lower output. If the temperature inside the car is not near the setpoint, the Stop/Start is not activated. In Houston where it is normally hot and humid in the summer, the Auto Stop/Start doesn't activate until the car cools off and then if you are stopped for long it will restart the engine, I assume to boost the A/C back up. It actually works fairly well.

the issue is solved by a software load (a full load, which takes approx. a night)
