Does the 2017 BMW X3 xdrive28i have the timing problems I hear about?

I have read and heard about timing problems with the N20 engines. Is that something to worry about for the 2017 X3 xdrive28i?

I believe the issues were resolved in the 2016 model year. Someone with more knowledge of the specifics will likely chime in.

It seems 2017 F25 did not have the same timing chain problem.

I'm pretty sure it's any F25 with a build date of 02/2015 or later. My mom's X3 was built 01/2015, and I'm under the impression it's got the bad tensioner. That cutoff also applies to the 10year/125k thermostat warranty.

it depends on the build date.

2017's are OK, it's 2016 and older X3 N20 models.

Unless this has been updated, for the N20 in the F25 the affected date range is February 15, 2012 to February 28, 2015. In other words for all models, the affected date range are models with the N20/N26 through Feb 2015 production. March production and later is unaffected.

Thank you very much!!!

2017 and newer x3 N20 engines do not have timing chain or tensioner issues.

You can input your VIN at sites like realoem.com or mdecoder.com. If your car was manufactured in March 2015 or later, you should be free of the issue described. 2016 MY production typically starts in the fall so you should be good.
