Does not meet type approval for the car and therefore totally illegal in the UK.

Hi all

Quick update:

Rang Halfords who will not fit bulbs purchased elsewhere.

I have however found a specialist German car garage round the corner from my workplace in Trafford Park, Manchester who will fit both the headlight and daytime running bulbs.

My next question is - I have already decided to buy H7 Philips Xtremevision bulbs as headlight replacements but what size of bulbs do I need for the daytime running lights? Are there any recommendations of a good white look bulb that will go with the Philips Xtremevision headlight bulbs?

Are there any other lights on the car I haven't mentioned that I should also consider? Keen to buy the bulbs and get them fitted - wish the car had come with Xenons to be honest but this seems tonne next best option. Car is brand new so wouldn't want to invalidate the warranty by messing with retrofit xenons. Thanks

The DRL bulbs on the halogen setups are W5W, I believe 194's will work as well. I'm getting ready to order some LED's to replace the DRL's now to match the low beam H7 LED's I just installed.

By the way, the LED low beams from OPT 7 fit great and look awesome. No warnings on the dash. I couldn't get the before and after pics to come out very well on my phone.

Not sure if Philips makes W5W/194 bulbs in the same "color" as the Xtremevision H7's, though.

Thanks for your help.

I wasn't aware that LED bulbs would be compatible as a replacement for halogen daytime running bulbs? Not sure if they woud be legal here in the U.K. Or not but we seem to have similar laws to the US it seems with regard to road visibility etc. If it is possible, I will consider them. I changed all the bulbs at home from halogen to LED... hate how wasteful halogens are.

I've found some Philips 'whitevision' W5W bulbs which would hopefully partner well with the Xtremevision H7 headlight bulbs. May go for them

Did you have any problems fitting the OPT7's? I reached out to them and they suggested it might not fit.

I didn't have any problems getting them to fit. After taking one of the halogen H7's out I compared it to the new LED unit...the length is fine and the mounting "plate" is of the same design. What I would say is that it appears there is an inner and outer plastic mount, if you will, on the LED unit. The outer mount is what snaps into place in the BMW headlight housing, and the inner mount can kind of move around within that. It's tough to explain but I got them both to fit snugly.

It's a lot of wiring, too. OPT 7 gives you the anti-flicker to go inline with it and you also have to use the adapter that splits it out into spade connections to hook into the BMW plug. The good thing is the headlight housings have plenty of space to stuff all the wiring into. I left the headlight housing caps off per the recommendation on their installation instructions to help with air movement/cooling.

You cannot replace halogen headlight bulbs with either LED bulbs or HID bulbs.

It is illegal and will fail an MOT.

If you fit these bulbs, the car needs to have auto headlamp levelling and headlight washer jets installed.

you cannot legally fit these types of bulb into a reflector headlamp housing - you will surely have seen cars (normally youngsters in corsas/fiestas) driving towards you with these bulbs fitted.....if a copper sees you, he can issue an on the spot fine for it.

Ive just upgraded the bulbs in my wifes Scirocco.....I put in Osram nightbreaker Laser........quite a noticeable difference and highly recommended!

back in my modding years, I purchased set of xenons oem that were wired to plug n play with halogens on E90. The lights worked great but they were not adaptive and I had light bulb error.
