It controls the temperature of the air coming from the 2 vents immediately adjacent to this control knob. Temperature of air coming from all other vents remain as per air conditioner settings.

Dial set to blue air comes out cold. Set to red, it comes out warm. Makes a huge difference when running the AC or heat so makes sure it is in the right position.

one more knob to turn

at least the passenger temp knob can be set to match the driver side, so there are only 2, instead of 3 knobs to turn when you want to make it warmer or cooler.
