Wow, that was fast! Fuel guage issues...

Barely logged 147 miles in the new 2012 X35i and went to fill the tank for the first time tonight ahead of trip tomorrow. Filled the tank with 13.7 gallons only to get into the car and see that the needle did not get higher than 1/2 and the "miles left" meter topping at about 186 miles. Thought it might be the gas cap, but all looks ok. Arrgh! I'm not missing something here, am I? The sensors seem screwed up.

I have had this at various random times on all sorts of different cars... It might be a pump thing or a car thing. I don't know if its necessarily a faulty sensor.

The gas gauge in your car isn't what stops the fuel pump from pumping fuel into your tank...

Never said it was. There could be a faulty sensor.

As I drove the car about 20+ miles today, the needle crept it's way up until it reached full (1) and the miles range also went up. It's like as if it needed me to drive a while to figure out that the tank was full. So, it's finally up to where it's supposed to be. I'm going to see if it does again with the next fill-up. Odd!

I wonder if that TSB applies to 2012 as well?

Make sure those sensors are good to go, especially before a long trip. You want an accurate reading. Automotive dealerships in your area should be able to help you out.

i had similar issue but it went away, it would take awhile for needle to adjust to full tank.

Ahh, I never came back an updated this from months ago... Well, it did turn out to be a faulty sensor. There are two sensors and one of them was faulty which they fixed and I no longer have the issue. I ended up bringing my X3 in for really another reason (rear passenger window no longer when down smoothly) and they had to fix that, so they checked the fuel sensors too. It's all good now, but yes, not having a working gauge isn't a great idea.
