My first scratch

Like a proud father, I look at car everyday to see how she's doing. On Friday coming back from the 3M paint protector installer I noticed my first scratch. Personally, I think it must of came from the installers because my car only has been driven 3 times and I wear running shoes. (I am already pissed at them for the "teenie bikini" they installed but thats another thread.)

On the positive side, you can't see the scratch because its on the door sill. Nevertheless it pains me.

Anyway, I thought I would share because now I am planning on applying 3M paint protector on all my door sills and I think you should too to avoid scuff marks. ( I already had the tailgate sill done )

In my humble opinion, BMW overlooked this one...how can you have so much paint exposed in a high traffic area...there should be a plastic door/foot sill. This is my first SUV so maybe other prestigious car manufacturers do the same thing. Is this aesthetics over functionality? or just an oversight? Now I am curious to check the X5 and see if it has a door sill.

In the US we get plastic door sill protectors. M-Sport gets the stainless M-Sport version.

I don't think it's an X line/ SAP only thing, but I am sure others will chime in.

Your 3m film idea is really good and you can also double your protection by buying the plastic ones we get here. Probably a lot less expensive than the stainless accessory parts posted in this thread.

Thanks for the tip...do you have the part number for the plastic door sill? It should look much better than 3M strips...I just didn't want to spend $400 on door sills since I just paid $50K for a car.

I searched the BMW USA website and only found the metal ones.

Are you sure it is a scratch and not a shoe scuff? I have the Alpine white. My wife shoes puts a black shoe sole scuff. I take Mcguers cleaner polish and it come right off. I know how it feels. I got my first car door ding. I like to just jokes them.

I got my first "ding" after a few days when the hatch opened accidently and hit the garage door.. I touched it up but it hurts... Just remember...only the owners notice these little dings.. I don't think there is new car that doesn't at least one minor ding after a few weeks of ownership....

I checked realoem.com for a part number but I got nothing. Call any US dealer's parts depart and ask for the plastic door sills.

Yup...I call it a real scratch because you can feel the groove inside. Someone dropped a tool because no shoe can leave that kind of mark....and if it was a stiletto heel then I have another problem with the wife.
