First Call out to BMW Assist

Went to tescos this morning and thought great as it snowed last night so i could try out my x3 in the snow!
Just loaded up shopping and my car wouldent go into reverse or drive! And a warning was up saying something like " Possible Lever problem" so called bmw assist and they were there in 25 mins which was great . After just over a hour of testing they diconnected battery for 10 mins and re-connected it and now it fixed the fault!
Has anyone else had this?

I seem to recall that the BMW 'brain' has some sort of Microsoft OS base - in which case its to be expected- when it stops working, reboot!

Good ole reboot

No, not had any such problem.. I too tried my X3 out in the first snow today.. very pleased with how it handled.. in my last 3 series, wouldn't have even made it out of my drive and out of my street.. but today.. no problem

Also went for a cheeky drive in the snow early this morning and had great fun! I did feel a little smug passing all those abandoned 1, 3 & 5 series at the side of the road. Most were msport with big wheels. Not many audi or mercs abandoned?!? Tomorrows ice might be a different story.

Not used assist yet but sounds like you had a very goid experience

Nobody got fired for choosing Microsoft. BMW's website also runs on Windows.

Is it true that X3 runs on Windows CE? Running a car on Windows CE is ridiculous. Not to mention a 4 hour reload time.

I've heard that it does run on Windows CE yes

I went for a long drive today and deliberately included some untreated roads to try out the xDrive and the winter tyres. It pissed everything although it wasn't at all icy anywhere really, mostly slush and snow. Very pleased though!

Forgot to respond to this fault in particular earlier. I had a different error come up - refer to error when driving thread. BMW Assist came out and did a similar reset and also charged the battery which they said was low (not sure exactly what was done as I wasn't there) but the error never came back and that was back in April 2011. There seemed to be a theory at the time that battery charge being low may have caused a random error

If its Microsoft based then surely all you will need to do is close all the windows, get out, get back in, and open the windows again.

Hmmm. Turns out
iDrive is running on QNX. What about the rest of the system?

That makes it even more laughable that some BlackBerry devices don't work

Hmmm, I think it's just using QNX for the telematics isn't it? According to wiki some of the source code used to be published. Not any more though as Research in Motion have now acquired the company and guess whose phones are some of the only ones to be compatible with BMW Office? Yup, RIM's Blackberry

Ahh, a good ol' full system reset always solves it! We used to have a Jaguar X-Type before the 520d and current 330d and one day it kept showing the Engine Malfunction Light and going into Limp Mode. We rang Jaguar and they said "leave it alone for half an hour."
The problem never returned.

Nokia's Symbian S60 (E-Series) also works fine with BMW Office.
