I have it too but unless it's unsafe I can't face more warranty work (it's a lease).

I just noticed that after "le wife" drove the car over 1000km trip, the clunk is gone.
At least I couldn't hear it yesterday nor today, when driving over "same old curbs" as before. Now 5000km on the clock. Maybe it is just good luck not hearing the clunk, but nevertheless... If I do not hear it every day, I will let it be. |

has anyone driven their rig on a dirt, washboarded road? that's where I hear it! It is worst case going up hill rather than down hill (downhill has more force on the front end). thoughts?
steering rack? or is it an inner tie bar end? or just overall slop in the rack? I can't find anything loose in the front end of my car. I have 13,000 miles and it made this sound on my road from day 1. I will say it's worse with the OEM run flat tires. Over the winter, I had my non-runflat nokians on my snow rims and the noise was less. odd. dealer had said this problem is not reproducable. |

Mine is going to the dealer for this in two weeks. My biggest fear is that the dealer wont be able to replicate the issue. It doesn’t happen often, mostly when turning in/out of a driveway over a small bump. Feels like something isn’t right. Any thoughts on if a SIB will be released for this?

I have had the same steering rack sound sins I took delivery may 2011. This spring the sound was getting vorse so I took the cart the dealer. They are stil strugling to find out were the sound is coming from. Is it no transfer of experience between the different BMW dealers? This thuesday they will try once more to fix it so i hope it ends well.

Took the car in for the tranny to be re-programmed and asked about the steering clunk. The dealer at first couldnt hear the problem. I explained its the same noise when the car is off and you attempt to turn the wheel. They could hear it then and also when driving over bumps with the wheels turned. Apparently they also drove other X3s on the lot and experienced a similar noise. They said everything looks like it checks out and there is no SIB (yet).
I guess I'll wait until there is a SIB put out there or it gets worse. |
