X3 Replacement Battery - Does it have to be OEM?

Just wondering if you needed to replace the battery on a X3 with the OEM battery from BMW or if you could use pretty much any generic battery.

I used to have a E90 335xi and you were only able to use the OEM BMW battery. The dealership had to code the new battery by switching a 0 to a 1 or something minuscule but still, you had to go to the dealership for the car to accept the new battery.

Has anyone had experience with this?

It's my understanding that this doesn't need to be done on your 2006 MY.

You can use any brand with the correct specs but, at least on my 07 X3, it still needs to be coded correctly. Any knowledgeable Indy should be able to do that.

I have a 2006. Bought the battery at Wal-Mart last summer. Have had no issues and no reset was needed. I did hook up the cables to a trickle charger so that the car always had power while I connected the new one.

Nope, The battery does not have to be registered in the E83 X3. That only began with the F25 2011 or later. I've replaced the batteries in my 2006 and 2010 X3's with Sears batteries without registration (although they tried quite hard to sell me the service) and they both worked perfectly.
