I have seen on youtube that you can actually remove the motor air filter, wash it,then re-install after it drys out.

Has anyone done this rather than buy a new filter.

Just get a new filter. It's cheap enough where you can afford to do it right. The only filters I've heard you can wash is the aftermarket like injen or AEM products. And you may need to spray them down with oil.

Yeah, don't bother. I just replaced mine for $19.

I agree the risk/reward for cleaning a relatively inexpensive engine air filter is not a good trade-off. The fine particulates trapped in the pores of the OEM air filter will not easily be removed by washing, so effectiveness of a re-used filter is likely reduced even after washing. If the filter is unknowingly damaged during this cleaning process, you increase the risk of dirty air by-passing the filter and causing serious and expensive problems down the road. There is also the potential to invalidate a possible warranty claim in vehicles still under warranty.
