Check Bicycle Fit First

Using the bike rack first designed by sk330i and shown at http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...177&highlight=
in July 2011, very nice, total cost under $30 + fork blocks $15-$25 each. One thing to realize is if you have a 29" mountain bike and you like to raise the handle bars with extensions you may have to remove the handle bars to fit the bike inside. My mountain bike will not fit inside. I've also lifted the handle bars on the road bike a bit, it will fit if the handle bars are loosened and turned inward.

What size is your road bike? Mine is 52 & my wife's 48 and they both fit inside my E83 without loosening the handle bars. Also, can you compress the front suspension on the mountain bike while transporting it? Perhaps that will give you enough headroom to clear the handle bar?

The mountain bike is a 17.5 frame, the road bike is a 58. Springs don't collapse. The road bike is the most important to carry securely. I can survive by laying the mountain bike flat. If it was a long distance mountain biking trip then serious dis-assembly could be done.

Boy, that's totally unacceptably for me. My 58cm road bike goes smoothly into my E92 with just the front wheel removed. Loosening the handlebar on the stem is not just inconvenient, it's dangerous.

Wow - you have a LOT of spacers on the steerer tube. At least 3.5" more than most bikes would have.

I haven't checked my 29er fit inside, but I did fit a 54CM cyclocross bike inside yesterday. Like you, I had to remove the seat, but otherwise, it fit nicely.

Seems you also have to remove the seat?

It is an extreme amount of spacers, if the bikes were more conventionally outfitted they would probably fit OK. - I definitely retighten the handlebars before proceeding. - The seats have to be removed.

Although not ideal, I'm sure the bike would fit in the backseat as it did in my E90....

- remove front wheel
- from the driver's side, put the rear wheel in first and it'll sit in the rear passenger-side foot well
- use a blanket to protect the leather
