Using 2nd hand E83 Wheels and tyres on F25

Hi,

I've read a previous thread but I'm still not 100% sure about this.
I want to bid on some second hand E83 wheels with Winter tyres fitted, but need to be 100% sure they will fit my F25 3.0d.

The tyres are listed as Continental Winter contact tyres 235/55/17.
My existing tyres on the F25 are 225/60/17 on 305 Wheels.

Can anyone confirm if they have done this already? Any issues?

Phil

Yes, did it last year. No problem.

I am also running 235/55/17 for winter.

A bit more goggling seems to suggest issues putting E83 wheels on F25. I'm confused : --

Here is a response from the late, great Lotus7 on the topic...

I've attached some photos of the E83 wheels I run in winter. The original tyre size was 235/65/17 but I replaced them with 235/55/17 to keep the rolling radius correct.

I don't have any problems with clearence for the brakes.

I am probably the other guys.. goes way back. The E83 wheels I got were third party from tirerack and not OEM wheels. I know it does not back sense given all the wheel data comparision from lotus. But in my case .. the 3rd party wheels did not work. If you found OEM wheels I think it would make sense to ask for style code of the wheels ( i.e 306/307 ..) from the thread contributor who was successful. If the wheel style number match , go for it.

Should be no problem with the tire size. I've been running 235/60/17s (ie slightly oversized) for the two years and over 40k kms (25k miles) without any issues. 235/55/17s shouldn't be an issue except because they are about 2% undersize, your speedo will read 2% high. Not a big issue.

Hi. Come november I will have the original set of 369 staggered wheels for my F25 available, when I put on the 305 Winter Wheels. I am switching from 19 inch to 17 inch as they are better for towing a caravan even though they don't look so good.

They have the original Pirelli tyres on with about 5-6mm left after 12,500 miles.

Anyone in the Uk intereseted?

I'm also looking at second hand 235/55/17. There seems to be a lot more around compared to 225/60/17.
Will the 235/55/17 fit ok on my F25 wheels? Just affect the speedo reading slightly?

Sorry I missed it- the answer is above in the thread!!

Some more questions-

I managed to pickup 4 second hand E83 wheels for £170
A few marks on them but look ok. Looking to cheap skate and get second hand tyres. I'm sure there are some horror stories about second hand tyres BUT...

1-Is it ok to fit mixed Winter tyres e.g Dunlop on front axle & Continental on Rear?

2-Could I use any of the following as long as all 4 tyres used are the same size? Any other combinations?
225/60/17 - Standard Fit
235/55/17 - -1.71 under diameter
235/60/17 - +1.71 over diameter
245/55/17 - -0.07 (also same as standard)

I would say used tyres would be ok but remember you need 3mm of tread for them to be effective.

Regarding the tyres, mixed tyres should be ok but the tread depth should be similar. Make sure you get the load rating correct '99' and you need a minimum of 'H' for the speed rating.

The E83 wheels do not fit
Left with egg on my face after taking them to the tyre shop to have the wheels swapped over. It was immediately obvious these wheels are not going to work.
I have either got the wrong type of E83 wheels (are there differences based on E83 engine/ brake size?)
Or the wheels are not genuine BMW wheels.
I've attached two pics below- one showing the callipers touching the wheel, the other pic is of the inside of the E83 wheel, with the size digits.

Looks like I need to either swap the winter tyres onto my F25 rims or get some rims that fit.

FYI- I've got the 30D engine, if that makes any difference to the calliper size?

I have the same wheels, I took a grinder and lightly clearanced the brake calipers. They have been on a while with no problems

Add some spacers to push out the rims slightly
I actually have 4 8mm spacers that will probably solve your issue for sale:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=909563

FYI - I'm running 12mm spacers on my F25 X3 winter setup to bring my winter rims (261M's) back to OEM F25 offset specs. No issues at all

Took a grinder- to the alloy wheel? Are you serious?

Spacers will absolutely fix your problem, those rims are 46 offset, way too much for the F25. I would suggest a 10mm spacer.

Couldn't be bothered getting spacers with extended bolts. Ended up selling the E83 wheels to the tyre fitting place. Lost £40 on the whole deal so not too bad. Now got the Dunlop winter tyres 235/55/17 fitted onto my OEM 17" rims.
I'll keep an eye on ebay for F25 17" rims, or complete summer wheel/tyre sets some is looking to off load for not many £'s.

I don't have any problems with clearance for the brakes.
Those are actually E53 X5 wheels (style 130) with an offset of 48 - fortunately I've got some - Check here: http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/

These are genuine E83 X3 wheels (style 148) with an offset of 46 - I've got some of those as well and it appears 2mm makes all the difference!!
