I have had a "clunking" sound from the drivers side front end over some bumps. It is particularly noticeable when the wheels are turned and you go over bumps. It seems to be in the area of the front suspension. Has anyone else had this problem?

If you have the DHP, others here have heard the same thing. It only seems to be with those who have the DHP though.

Last weekend I spent pretty decent amount of time to minimize creaks from center console, instrument panel and rear half part of vehicle. Used lots of black felt fabrics and variety of black plastic shims and etc. Still not 100% perfect but vastly improved.

I'll identify more sources and use some teflon spray and liquid for the next treatment.

Miad911, how did you install black felt? Did you have to remove the plastic covers from the center console etc? Are they easy to remove?

i will be asking them to look at it when it is in for its first service next month. But i doubt they will be able to do much. With such a low number of new X3s currently running here in the UK i doubt they will have had many experience/reports on this. Especially as imo, rattles and creaks only bother some people...

Felt ... rubber ... spray ...

Reminds me of the old used French cars I had as a student.

Build quality and materials used for the dashboard could certainly be better. But it seems to be those optional add-ons like the center speaker that weren't properly tested (or integrated - e.g. buttons). Every time I drive over a manhole cover that central speaker cover creaks. Not sure yet if I let them do anything in a month or so, when I switch to summer tires and let them do the first service. Afraid they'll ruin more than they do good ...

With regard to the console cover that is; one piece surrounding both cd/radio and climate controls - can't work out whether it is the type of plastic that has been used that is inherent to creaking and clicking or whether it is the way it is fixed/mounted that allows it to be noisy?

Has anyone removed it to try and quieten it down?

I finally had a chance to bring the x3 in. They replaced a bunch of suspension parts on the passenger side, the rattle is still there. They adjusted the rear gate and latch the clicking is still there. I have searched this site and found that a few members reported that there is a service bulletin stating there are "caps" that need to be added to the transmission I have copied thes post and will bring the to the dealer with me on my next trip. the rattle is not in the suspension the truck is tight. It's at low speeds over bumps like entering or exiting a drive way. Very frustrating.

I've had the same problem since February 2011. Nobody seems to know how to fix it. They replaced my steering rack, some bushings, some other components, and nothing has gotten better. I don't know what to do. Let me know what happens.

Truck is back at dealership. Took it in yesterday and drove with the service manager, he was able to duplicate the rattle. He still suspects its suspension,I feel better now that he heard the rattle and they will hopefully get to the bottom of this. I will post the outcome

My X3 is at the dealer due to a really loud and annoying squeak coming from the driver seat...it suddenly started with an on and off squeak...
And it just got really bad...
As I write this post dealer just said.."can't duplicate the squeak" so when I pick up the car will see if the squeak returns...

Just received another call,it seems they narrowed it down to a ball joint. They ordered the part and it will be in tomorrow. The truck only has 11,000 miles on it I find it very odd a ball joint failed at this time. I am hopeful they are right and this issue is solved. I will report back tomorrow and let you know.

Just a quick update. Picked up the truck today and hit every bump I could find on the way home. Silence finally!!! Seems like it was a right front thrust rod ball joint that failed. The part # for the item 31-10-6-787-665. Hope this helps anyone with a similar issue.

It's funny they have not figured that out earlier. Normally ball joints are one of the primary suspects for noises coming from front suspension . My previous two trucks (Jeep and Nissan) had early ball joint failures both of which were replaced under either a TSB or a recall.

I agree the last visit they replaced just about everything else. Hope this is not an ongoing issue,we don't have the best roads in NYC but I would hope the x3 can handle them

The inside of the steering (teeth) hits the envelope when driving over bumps.
The BMW inspector said BMW has to make another steering but are waiting for the budgets.

Had passenger side ball joint replaced at 11,000 km. Dealer seemed surprised that it failed so early. Dealer checked remainder of suspension and claimed everything to be a-ok.

Now driver side ball joint is going. Have an appointment for the 9th of April. Will see what dealer says this time. Perhaps there is a defect in the ball joints themselves or in the geometry of the suspension. I sure hope it is the former and not the latter.
