Unhappy Problem with F25 X335i, help!

This morning I get a sudden warning stating, "xDrive and DSC Malfunction" anybody have any ideas on this? On another note, I also picked up a set of used snow wheels and tires (Breyton Race GTS and Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60) equipped with TPMS. Wheels were originally on a 335 sedan and are OEM 335 fitment (225/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rear). Getting an error that says TPMS malfunction. It was working fine for 3 days until this started happening. This TPMS error has been happening for about a week and then all of a sudden this morning I get the xDrive/DSC error. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You are using the tire sizes you mention as OEM on the sedan?

I suggest that is your problem, completely messing with the wheel speeds. Watch you don't cause issues with the transfer box as well, as XDrive is very sensitive to tire sizing front to rear.

Transmission Malfunction

About the "xDrive and DSC Malfunction" issue - I am currently trying to get my X3 fixed for a transmission malfunction.

As I was driving (20-30 mph) the car appeared to disengage the transmission then there were a couple of sharp jolts, almost like the transmission shifted abruptly. It was very noticeable and the car was very unresponsive. I immediately pulled the car off the road. During that time the error message "Transmission malfunction" was displayed, following that message another message appeared "DSC and xDrive Malfunction". I turned the car off and then restarted, and it appeared to be functioning/driving/shifting normally. This was the second time this issue occured, the first, however, I did not get any error messages and only the sharp jolts from the transmission and I did not need to restart the car.

I would recommend taking your car in to get checked, I ignored it the first time, thinking it was nothing serious. I took it in to get diagnosed, and your error message may be a different issue, but it appears that if you get any of these messages the car is going into a "safe mode" for some reason. In my case there seems to some kind of transmission fluid temperature sensor issue, I still have to bring it back, and will update here when I get the final fix, if any. . .

My 28i has the same issue as yours 5 times. The dealership and BMW Canada finally have to replaced the mechatronic unit and reprogram my car.

Here're the errors I have.....

Thanks Gareth for the info, I had basically seen the same sequence of error messages. I'll have to mention your fix the next time I bring the car in. I noticed that there are several other related posts circulating around with others experiencing the same malfunction errors, and figured it might have something to do with the mechatronic unit.

I realise this has probably got nothing to do with your error messages, and from my location I'm obviously not familiar with your local laws, but I am surprised it is legal fitment to use wheels/tires with such a large variation from the F25 OEM tire size (~10% difference in overall diameter).

And one further thought - what is the load rating on those tires you have on? Given the F25 X3 is 500+ lb heavier than a 335 sedan (ie 20% heavier) I'd doubt the tires from an 335 sedan would have a high enough load rating for an F25 X3.

Tony -

Load rating is fine these have an XL load rating, which is designed for heavier vehicles (these Blizzaks come as an XL standard). Car has exhibited no weird behavior with all of the error messages. Leads me to think the DSC module is at fault.

@gareth - what's the mechatronic unit?

Car is going in for service Monday afternoon, should know something by Tuesday/Wednesday. Will keep all of you posted. If anyone has suggestions, please continue to write them here. Thanks!

We have a solution everyone. Issue was down to the sidewall size on my tires. BMW Dealer put the OEM Style 309s back on and all error messages disappeared. Called up Tire Rack and was told I could keep the staggered Breyton's, but would have to run 245s all around (I don't want heavy duty snow tires like the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 since the dry and wet, rain not snow, grip is diabolically dangerous). Had to go with a set of Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero Serie II in 245/50/18 all the way around and I've been assured that will solve the issue (Tire Rack has been dead on every single time I've ordered from them and had product questions). To deal with the TPMS issue, I'm ordering a new set of TPMS sensors just to be on the safe side.

Why do people post such non-sense? Blizzak WS70 are "diabolically dangerous" on wet and dry pavement? What a load of crap. While they may not be the best tires for your situation, they are far from dangerous. Where are you getting this from anyway? I have read a lot of reviews of the WS70's and I haven't seen this before. Tire Rack, who you seem to trust seems pretty happy with the WS70's. http://blog.tirerack.com/blog/hunter...?affiliate=TX3

This is coming from someone who put staggered wheel and tire sizes on his AWD truck and then wondered why he got error codes.

the OP's post should be a cautionary tale. RTFM folks. with these modern cars, and especially with AWD cars, one can't just go strapping on wheels/tires all willy nilly. the cars ABS, traction control, etc. computers can adjust for about + or - 3 - 5% difference in rolling diameter without adjusting the settings. anythign else and you'll get codes.

Agree - these are systems not seperate items - if you change one part it impacts the system. Tire size changes are one such item that can only be chaged within certian limits before the system says - time out.

The dry and wet weather handling is not exactly great, having had a less than satisfactory experience with the WS60s. Look to each his own, but from my experience the LM Series tires are much more responsive for my winter needs. I'm getting this from personal experience (if that's alright with you).

And to everyone else, yes lesson learned. Should've known better thinking I could attempt to be more cost effective rather than just doing it right from the start.

"Not great" or not as good as the LM series for your needs is quite a bit different than "diabolically dangerous" as you posted earlier.

yes, you can put staggered wheels on the x3.

what you can't do is put on wheels and tires with vastly different rolling diameters from stock, which is what the OP did.
