UPdated thread on my next BMW choice

UPDATED 8/30

To follow up with you guys I just got back from BMW of Freehold, NJ. Where I got an awesome deal on my current 2013 x3 35i 60k MSRP (every option), 10k a year, 3500 out of pocket, $555 a month. I was a hurricane sandy victim hence the ridiculous cheap price. Anyway. I test drove the 328i GT no M sport no DHP and it drove very nice and smooth and a little body roll as expected. I even packed up the trunk in the x3 so I can see what a packed trunk looks like in the GT. To my expectations everything fit. Except the umbrella stroller I have to not fit horizontally only on an angle. X3 seems to be at least 3-4 inches wider in the cargo area. Now on to the pricing:

Good news is that the 2016 GT models have more standard options and the packages are less. For ex 28i trim, M sport is only $2600 as opposed to $3400, premium is only $950, from $2200. So optioned exactly the way I want. It came out $2700 cheaper for the 2016. The 2015 I priced was $58,900. Do the math. So with that being said. The best price they gave me with $3900 out of pocket was $615. What a fkin joke man!! $615 they can GFTS, lol. I told them that was a decent deal and walked out with a smile. Lmao. I told him I'll see him next week anyway for the event that gives you a $1000 voucher for your next vehicle. Here is the kicker to the story. I already priced out with my lease broker "friend" a 335 GT at $63,000. You'll never believe the price. $609 with $3500 out of pocket. LOLLLL. for the 328 GT, same build and MSRP as Freehold.... You ready!! You ready for the price......................

$518 with only $3400 down.

END OF STORY. I'll update you guys on what I'm gonna do. Enjoy you weekend and I hope you love this story.

Original Post:

Coming out of my X3 35i M soon freaks me out because it's the best car/sav I've had throughout my driving life (I'm 31). I'm big into leasing so I'm def not buying it out. But also another problem is with my personality; I always like change and something new and refreshing. The LCI X3 DOES NOT cut it for me. The changes are too subtle to justify a lease over $600 a month (I always try to get every option) And the new X3 which i REALLY want does not come out till August/October 2016, this brings me to my title in this post.

Now my new budget since I'm saving more is $500 a month as opposed to $600. I will only put down at MOST out of pocket expenses including tax, $4,000., Putting my grand total at $22,000. $3000 less then what I spent on my X3. Plus I will use the savings for an Enzo Flash tune costing $800.

I have just a few months left on my lease ( 01/23/16) and I need to start buckling down and looking for the next purchase. I'm going to the dealer on the 29th just to "talk" numbers

I narrowed it down progressively to what I really want.

2015 335i Xdrive GT priced around 57K ( or 328 if price is too high $55k)

2015 528i Xdrive $60k

2015 X5 35i ( no big options though) $60k

2015 X4 28i $59k

I need that space as I have young kids, 3 and 1. That stroller is the killer on some trips, lol. But the X3 swallows everything whole.

I'm just looking for some of your opinions on here as to what you would get. I really appreciate the help guys and gals. Have a Great Day.

Dude! Go with the X4! We currently have a 2013 X3-28i, that is what I will do. But unlike you I never lease I always buy. I just put to many miles on a car.
I always buy CPO. I can't afford new. I make less than $60K/Yr as THE IT guy at a multi-national agra-business.
And as for miles/yr... In the 4 years we had our '08 328i M-Sport coupe I put 96K on it. Our '05 Tahoe (last New purchase) it has over 253K miles.
In about 4 years I'll be looking for a CPO 2015 X4-28i.

Good luck with your search.

I went through a similar debate recently. The 3GT was my choice.
Whatever you choose, make sure you get the kit you need/want.

Tough decision, Crash. To try to help sort it out, I'm in the midst of running acceleration analyses for each of these you are interested in and when finished I'll post the graph on the '!X3 Acceleration Files - Master List!' [ http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1149189 ]. I'll also make a table to compare internal dimensions and measures as I did with the other Mnfrs' SUVs. I hope it helps with your decision.

Please consider diesel. The "change" will be interesting. Plus, for a ute it's a winner.

Don't do it to save money. Go diesel because it's fun, less trips to the pump and you might save money.

Here is the summary table comparing the vehicles you are considering, Crash. I'll post the acceleration curves on the main thread '!X3 Acceleration Files - Master List!' You might as well strike X4 off the list. It's more expensive to lease than an X3, it's still an X3 beneath the fancy body, so as an LCI it won't be different enough, it's got the weaker N20 (you seem to like fast cars) so it's a downgrade from your N55, it's smaller than your X3 (you value space as you said). Sounds like the X3 fits all your needs. I'd just buy it out and mod the crap out of it.

X5. You'll love the extra space with the kids, especially if that stroller you're talking about is a double.. We started out with an X3 with our 2 kids. about a year after our second was born, traded it in a year before lease was up on the X5. Trying to fit in the X3 got too annoying especially on trips, but even daily with the damn double stroller in the back.

Thanks my friend, Speed is important but not a priority because whatever I decide it will have a piggy back or Flash on it

I had the 2012 X5 D, fully loaded. Loved it but I lost it in Hurricane Sandy

But it's still different, space I can find a solution for long trips by getting roof storage if need be.

Like I said above "I had the 2012 X5 D, fully loaded. Loved it but I lost it in Hurricane Sandy " Yup and it was 70K MSRP so you know it had everything back in 2012 minus 3rd row and rear entertainment

If the car you want is coming in fall 2016, try to renegotiate your lease for that time period.

You don't think that crossed my mind? Fact is, and you make a great point, I'm already 5.5k miles over my 30k, so already $880 over. Not sure if it's worth it.... thoughts?

A personal decision for sure, Crash. As for us, we're counting the days until the G01 is released (if we only knew how many days that is...). So for the first time in ages we are holding on to our vehicle past its warranty. I'm getting a new set of Michelin Primacy MXM4s tomorrow, and next month will purchase the Platinum Extended Svc Contract to tide us over until it is released. There just isn't any other vehicle out there that fits us like this 'X3 xDr35i glove' does, and I have no doubt the 2017 X3 xDr40i will be a fine replacement indeed.

I would go with the 335i GT if you want to keep your payments lower. Sedans have a higher residual, so you'll get more car for your buck. You'll get the speed you want while keeping your payments lower. Based on the lease offers on bmwusa, the residual on the 335i GT is 65%, 528i XDr is 64%, and both the X4 28i and X5 35i are 58%. Have you considered an 2015 X1? That has a 64% residual, so maybe you can find a good deal on a 35i now that the 2016s are out.

BMW Financial Svcs offers three plans to extend your service coverage after the original new car warranty expires - Platinum (covers everything but limited on the interior and exterior trim items), Gold (limited electrical and none on the infotainment sys), and Powertrain Plus (mainly just the major drivetrain components). You can choose 5-6-7 years (adding 1, 2, or 3 years) for 70K miles or 100K miles. The link takes you to the page where you can watch a short video, and the details are provided in a pdf download link there as well.

With the Platinum it basically continues what we now have with the new, but there is a $50 deductible. We're just going to get the 2 extra years which should give plenty of time for the G01 release.

awesome chart you've put together. Are you sure the cargo capacity of the X5 is correct though? I can't imagine it is 4 cubic feet less than the X3 for a car that is 9 inches longer in length?

Thank you for the kind words, Lotus. Indeed, I was surprised as well. I took that directly from the X5's bmwusa.com website: "Leave nothing behind. With one of BMW's largest cargo spaces, you'll find it hard to run out of anything. The X5's rear seats split 40/20/40, folding away to convert 23 cubic feet of trunk space in to a full 66 cubic feet." http://www.bmwusa.com/bmw/Xmodels/X5 If one looks at the actual specifications page, the cargo space is not detailed, and I couldn't find it at Edmunds. http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx Looking at the CAD side view of the X5, from mid-rear wheel to back of bumper is 41.9".

Similarly, for the X3 at bmwusa.com website: "Capacity to live your life. With loads of flexible space, the BMW X3 is perfect for all trips. Its trunk expands from 27.6 cubic feet to 63.3 cubic feet when the rear seat is folded down- giving you multiple storage possibilities." http://www.bmwusa.com/bmw/Xmodels/X3 If one looks at the X3's specs page, the cargo space is not detailed either. Interestingly, however, mid-wheel to bumper is 38.2, only abt 3" difference. http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx

Not quite sure how to explain it, whether the vertical volume is different, whether the X3 utilizes the interior volume better, ...? But these are BMW's numbers.

Last edited by Max Well; 08-21-2015 at 03:57 PM.. Reason: Listed the X3's main page url twice.

Could it just be that the X5 gives more front space room?

I didn't consider the X5, the X3 was pricey enough, so I haven't been in one.

The X5 has an optional 3rd row, so I'm assuming that is factored into the cargo numbers. I've always wondered why it was listed so low as well, and that's the only explanation I can think of. Guys, go look at both. There's no comparison, the X5 is much bigger in every way. We went from an X3 (F25) to an X5 (F15)and even put the X3 next to a friend's E70 X5, put our double stroller in both trunks, measured at the floor and at the cargo cover, etc when we were considering getting the F15. the X3 is a great car, but it is unmistakably smaller. There is no clown car magic. It's smaller in every dimension and the interior volume is no exception.
