Question Auto Stop-Start & Auto Hold.

'Auto Start-Stop' and 'Auto Hold' - are these features fitted to your X3 too?

I rate these two features very highly; anyone else appreciate them too?

I liked them too when I tested. Stop start only makes sense to me with an automatic gearbox. Works fine, but eerily quiet when it switched off at a junction in the middle of nowhere in the dark.

Auto-hold good too, but thought I had backed into something when it came on when reversing very very slowly into a tight parking space.

Use start/stop all the time, Autohold is ok as long as you're not reversing

Me too. Really like Autohold too. By chance, not had it switched on when reversing so thanks for the useful tip!

I find Autohold invaluable when reversing. I have to back into tight spot on my drive, I use it every day. Brilliant.

I've grown to love both features. The auto-hold in particular is one of those "why didn't they think of it before" things. I realise its only been possible with the development of electronic handbrakes - but its still fantastic. Only wish is that it could be on by default rather than have to manually switch it on every time you start the car.

Don't have the Start/Stop in N.Amer. but I have the Auto Hold on mine. Use it a fair amount in town, and like it.

I'm still awaiting the arrival of my car so this is not from experience.

You are in slow moving traffic, you get to the roundabout/junction, patiently wait, long gap in traffic appears but auto stop kicks in just before you start to move off, followed by the car behind you who was anticipating you moving off.

Trust me this is not a problem - start up is very quick and smooth.

Love the Auto Hold for the commute. I do turn it off for slow manuevering and backing, though, as it can grab when not desired.

At this stage the auto stop/start is only on the diesel models - although I thought I did read somewhere it was coming on the new N20-engined X3s.

Thank you those words of wisdom - I was wondering why only some markets appear to enjoy Auto Stop/Start.............'everyday's a school day'!

I can't have auto hold and stop start both switched on because it's so annoying and switches the engine off for very short periods (with no fuel saving benefit but extra wear). I can control stop start using the brake with auto hold off and don't mind using it when I decide if it's worth cutting the engine or not. I lost patience with having them both switched on a while ago.

Turn it off in quick stop/start traffic, but mine works great in this situation and starts quickly and moves off briskly. I do have the very latest software though.

You can also "actively" not let it do start/stop even if it is on.

Just press brake very gently when your speed is close to zero and when you are stationary, still keep the brake pedal pressed very gently. Almost let the car roll very slowly. (with automatic gears of course). In this way the engine never stops.

And if you like the engine to start before your spot in the traffic appears, turn your wheel a little and the engine starts, now you have engine running before you lift brake pedal up...

I don't think the problem is moving off quickly. It's that you don't really want it stopping the engine for less than 10 seconds because you won't actually save any fuel over periods that are too short (I think I read 7 seconds is the minimum before you see a gain) and you will also increase wear on the components used during a start. Having to switch it on and off will mean most people just switch it off permanently

I love Auto Hold, use it most of the time.
Start/Stop on the other hand, always have it switched off.
