At least on our Aussie-spec X3s it should be in the compartment on the left hand side of the luggage area - you have to pull out the cover. From there it should either be in a small tool kit or simply sitting loose in a holder located down the bottom of that compartment. You may need a torch to shine some light on things.

If you're referring to the key that unlocks the wheels, I went to look for mine after owning the car for a year and couldn't find it. I had my local dealer that has done all the servicing on my car check to see if they could find it and they couldn't. They were nice enough to order me a new one for free.

Thanks, but I checked both sides behind the covers. I have a slight memory that F25`s locking nut place was somehow different as previous 6 BMW´s I have had. Anyway, have to order a new one.

Yes, I practically moved myself in to a boot for an hour. Nothing´s found with my eyes.

Ditto.

With my car I got two lug-nut keyed sockets and all four bolts that were replaced with the lock nuts.

I took one of the keyed sockets out and put it in my tool box then returned everything to the rear compartment along with my jack pad and wheel hanger just in case those bits were needed by a non-bmw service centre.
