In a review for the X3 xDrive35i when it was released, a south african car magazine achieved 0-62mph in 6,56 and that was their best time. Seems strange. Anybody have good times on a stock 35i?

Careful sivakumarbalu, you'll catch hell from some guys on the forum for including a Kia in your list.

Audi Q5 2.0T = 6.8 secs
Audi Q5 3.2 = 7.0 secs seems weird that the bigger engine that uses more gas would be slower in 0-60 times. Too much focus on looks not enough on performance? Interesting enough though, the 35i has better fuel mileage over the slower 28i. Probably another good indication on where the X3 stands vs. its competition.

It is sad but true that 0-60 (or 62) times are not a scientific measure.
They depend on fuel, air temperature, air pressure, humidity, tyres and tyre pressures, road surface (grip / traction), driving technique, inclination or declination of the track (they are not all flat), individual car power variances (not all cars are created equal although fuel injection has made them far more consistent than carburetors), the measuring system for timing and even the wind speeds. Too many uncontrollable variables mean you cannot put a lot of faith in measurements or assume they are absolute numbers that can be accurately compared. Lotus' comment on "consistently" in a range of 5.3 to 5.5 gives you an idea. Every measurment may have an absolute accuracy based on the measuring timer and method, but the car itself and all cars of the same type will have an even bigger spread of times, then throw in the other variables and the real uncertainty or error in "THE" acceleration time for an X3 35i will be quite significant. So, its not a single true number. Ever. You can stop losing sleep over it or getting into bar fights over it. Even a car magazine's best comparison (same day, track and driver) will suffer from temperature differences during the day of testing and also from any fuel differences (supplier, age, condition, octane, etc) provided in the test vehicle. The temp can effect track grip and intercooler performance, and even the power generated in combustion to a small degree. The most losses in accel times occur in the first 10-20mph, where wheel spin and agressiveness in the take off make a huge difference. An Australian Top Gear road test between a Z4 35is and a Boxster Spyder last year had the Z4 walk all over the boxster in every speed increment EXCEPT the 0-10kph range, where the Z4 was about 0.5 seconds slower. But yet they did not see this as a problem in reporting their numbers. They just trusted the datalogger. Either they were sitting there spinning the wheels or they were rolling early and not accelerating for the first half second. Either way, their technique could have been better if they saw where the problem was. (Its called the Theory of Constraints) If you see a number and its better than what you thought, it may be an anomoly. If you see one worse, its probably due to variability in who an how they did the test. Certainly dont lose any sleep over 0.1 or 0.2 difference in a measure, and dont get upset over a compilation of numbers from a number of different experiments on different cars. Qudos to the OP for posting the list as it is interesting , but in the scientific world, we would call the comparison numbers indicative, not absolute.

as for this chart, going to suck when the Porsche Cajun comes out and you need to add a line that might be lower than 5.6

Yeah I certainly would not consider an SRT8 Grand Cherokee to be in the same ball park as the X3. That is a purpose built lead sled.
Lotus mentions the slowness of the new pentastar V6 in the Cherokee which yields an 8+ second 0-60 but even when you step up to the 5.7L Hemi rated at 360 HP / 390 TQ, the numbers are not impressive at all. I think it is near 7 seconds to hit 60. We cross shopped the Cherokee and it was a dog, performance and efficiency wise. Don't get me wrong it is a very solid SUV and has a pretty nice interior and a bit more space than the X3 but the lack of a modern tranny really holds the Cherokees back. |

My X3 35D M Sport with 2100 Miles clocked 5.5 too 60MPH @ Sneterton race track last week, I thought that was good for an SUV Diesel.

With a remap it should be a tenth or two quicker, I don't think I'll bother though.

The 6.2 figure is what is quoted in the sales brochure here for the 0-100kph times. My money is on the journalist (cough, cough, hack, choke), sorry, writer, just using the number from the paperwork in his media briefing.
