Too soon for the annual winter tire thread?
I know it's only September but temperatures are starting to drop which got me thinking about winter tires.
I have a set of 18" bmw 307 wheels with Pirelli Sottozero II winter tires and I'd like to swap the Pirelli's for a set of Blizzak tires (225 width to improve traction). I can't seem to find the discussion from last year where other members installed 'em. What would be the correct ratio to create the stock diameter?

What would be the best rim size to get when looking to get winter/snow tires? I am currently running the stock Goodyear tires on my 19" M package rims, but I am looking to purchase a smaller size rim as well as winter tire for this season since I make a few trips up to the mountains to go snowboarding.

I have the 18" rims but I want to change tire width from 245 down to 225mm.
some 17" rims fit but I stuck with the factory 18"

Not too soon, but winter tyre tests for 2014 are still not published.

I am thinking about buying a set of Pirelli Winter Carving Edge RunFlat from Tirerack (245/45 R19). Need the run flats since wife won't ever change the tires. Anyone has experience with these tires?

Nokian Hakka R2 Run Flat... best overall snow tire you can get... worth the extra $$.
Its ideal to run a square winter setup as narrower is better, so you dont want wider tires in the rear. My snow rims are 18x8. Problem with snows is when it comes to RF theres only about 4-5 choices in the X3 sizes when I looked last year; Hakka R2s, Blizzaks, Michelin Alpin, Pirrelli (not Sottos I think)... |

I have the staggered 622M with PZero summer rubber, so really had no choice but to pick up a winter set up. That in mind, I just ordered the following from TireRack:
O.Z. Superturismo LM in Matte Graphite Silver 19" x 8.5" ET29 Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D DSST RunOnFlat in 245/45R19 I know that most folks size down to 18" x 8" for winter... but I don't do a ton of classically severe-service driving (it's mostly highway driving in the cold) so I weighed snow/ice traction, dry handling, noise and tread life a bit differently than other's (in colder/snowier/icier conditions) might. The wheels are square, have a bit less offset than stock (8.5" at 29mm vs. 8.5" at 38mm in front and 8.5" at 29mm vs. 9.5" at 51mm in the rear) so they should sit a ~8mm wider. Nothing dramatic, but I'll be sure to post pics come November. If anyone wants a recommendation for a dedicated set up on 18"s and aren't overly concerned with buying wheels and tires seperately, I would highly recommend going with Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2s. In 18" they come in RFT for BMW dimensions and they are really an incredible snow/ice performer (and don't make a ton of noise and/or melt in warmer temps). Which shouldn't be surprising at $325-$350/each. Next to the Hakka's, I've heard great things about Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4s, which come in RFT in 245/50R18... but good luck finding any! Also- this was part of my inspiration... And Mingstar88's X3 Last edited by Roundown; 09-15-2014 at 09:44 PM.. |

I had these on a VW a few years back and thought they were fine. No complaints. Would prefer Nokians, but they don't make them in 19" (though I encourage you to reach out, maybe next go round they will!). |

245 x 50% = 122.5mm sidewall 225 x 55% = 123.75mm sidewall. note - tire size calculator available here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=12 |

In case anyone is looking, www.tiresbyweb.com stocks and ships Nokian tires w/in the US (they also carry other European brands like Vredestein). Seems like reasonable pricing as well $376/p for Hakka R2s.
Anyone buy from them? |

TirePros they are a RI shop with a bunch of locations. But I think I called Town Fair back then are they also could get them. Tire Pros is less than a mile from work so... From exp almost any shop can get any brand with a phone call, but price is not always the same depends on the distributor.
