How many of you installed mud flaps?

Was reading another thread in which OP posted some nice pictures of his x3 with mud flaps installed.

I never though about mud flaps before but now start to wonder if it's a good idea to take the trouble to install them.

My dear fellow X3 owners, what's your thoughts on mud flaps? How bad could the running mud hurt the paint without those flaps?

Thanks.

I always put them on our trucks/wagons, and some of our cars depending on the look (for instance, I bought a front set for my E89 Z4, but decided to leave them off since they sort of ruined the lines of the front fender). To me, the main benefit is in winter driving, as it keeps some nasty stuff from kicking up and spraying the rocker area of the car. But it would also apply to any wet or dirty roads, or gravel roads. At least in the case of the X3, they look good, are cheap, and are easy to install, so it seems to be a no-brainer to go for it.
