Cars.com's Closed-Door Look at 2011 BMW X3

While no press test drives for the new X3 have been available yet, David Thomas from Cars.com recently had an opportunity to poke around a preproduction 2011 X3 at the BMW Championship at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club. He came away very impressed at its upgraded quality, design, and size from the first generation X3.

The 2011 BMW X3 makes its worldwide public debut at the Paris Motor Show at the end of this month.

Here are some excerpts from David Thomas' review:

Quote:
Overall, the interior is quite a few steps up from the current generation. It’s modern and sleek, perhaps the most modern of BMW’s new models like the 5 Series sedan and Gran Turismo. The wood trim is quite nice, but perhaps the most telling touches of this car’s luxury pretensions are the well-padded, leather-wrapped doors.

As I thunked the BMW-solid doors, hit the power tailgate button and took in the Monaco Blue paint job and tan leather interior, I could tell this was unmistakably a major move up from the current generation. But the X3 needs to be. Since it debuted in 2003, every luxury automaker has joined the space, with Audi’s Q5, Mercedes-Benz’s GLK and Volvo’s XC60 stealing market share.

I still think the exterior design already looks dated.

Thanks Jason. I'm sure this tidbit will satisfy plenty on this forum:

"BMW also confirmed that the smaller X1 SUV, which is closer in size to the outgoing X3, will come to the U.S. sometime next year."

I saw this same X3 at the BMW Championship (it was in the BMW Owner's Pavilion so any current owner had access to check it out in person and sit in it). The elephant skin dash covering is still present but overall I do agree with the journalist's assessment that it is a tremendous step up from the outgoing model (interior especially) and the size feels perfect to me. I have been waiting on this new model as a 2nd car to complement my M3 and am very happy with what I saw. I can't wait to drive it later this year.
