Quick Hello
Hi Guys,
I've been a regular on the Z4 forum for a while - time to start haunting your threads. We have just ordered a X3 30d with M Sport (in Carbon Black with Black leather - plus nav / Xenon / CA / 19" M rims / etc...) I'll post a pick when she arrives - and here is the bad news - due to global demand I wont get delivery until November... Oh well. Must be a good car then to be so popular...

Your cars get driven across the border. Ours are part of an allocation that is mapped out months in advance. They custom build all Australian cars to meet our ADRs (Australian Design Rules) which influences all sorts of minor specifications, so BMW Aust has to order "blocks" of cars out of the production runs. The X3 is far more popular than expected, and BMW Australia has sold all of its allocation up until the end of September, so mine will be built then and subsequently shipped (by a slow boat) down under, arriving probably late October. We should see it (after it clears customs in Melbourne and then gets transported 2000km by truck north to Brisbane) in early to mid November, if all goes well and BMWNA honours its allocation commitments to small foreign markets.

5 months relatively short against 9-10 months in the UK but I think this is only for the 20d. Perhaps the bottleneck is the 20d engines
Congratulations on your order

Hi Everyone,
I'm in Melbourne, Australia and ordered a 20d on 4 May 2011. Build in August (sometime), expected delivery end of September. 5 Months. Regards. PS: Dr Stig, there is a thread called Australian Delivery times if you're interested. |

Thanks guys for the welcome.
The Z4 stays. It's my toy / commuter. The X3 will be the family transporter. Wow - those UK waits are a killer. Here they tell me the 30d is the longest wait time. I'll have to check the Aussie thread to see if the dealer was on the money.

We got the same problem in sunny South Africa! Ordered my X3 2.0D in April and it finished production 23 June. The atlantic crossing takes another 4 to 8 weeks. Then it sits at customs where our government takes its share with a 100% import tax. It then gets prepared localy and finally driven by truck to Johannesburg. My expected date of delivery is currently sitting at the first of September. The wait is getting unbearable and the constant nagging thought of "I should have ordered this or that ........." really irritates me.

What bumps it to 100% import tax? 34 customs, 14 VAT, max 20 ad valorem is 68 (which is already a lot!). Where do they hit you with the last 32%?

You're right. Had a look at our revenue system and we are sitting on 70% import tax in total. I got the 100% from taking what I paid in our local currency and converting into dollars. If you then compare it to US prices you get to about 100%.I presume BMW South Africa takes the rest. Makes you cry....

Yes.
The various regional BMW companies are making a killing. In USD a fully loaded 30d m sport is about $120k here in australia. Or about $110k in Aussie dollars. We have a 10% tax, a 33% luxury tax on the price over $57k and about 4% stamp duty. The math isn't linear, but it means the base car is about 50-70% more here than the wholesale price in the UK or US. All going back to the fatherland, because they can charge it and we keep paying it. Makes you mad.
