Extra warranty can be purchased so long as it is before your current warranty expiration date and/or you are below the mile limit.

Edit: This information goes for certified pre owned by BMW

About 6 months ago, I pulled the trigger on an extended warranty from Fidelity (Platinum package). $2800 for 6 years/ 72K miles coverage with $100 deductible. The BMW service manager that services our X3 had great things to say about Fidelity. Prices vary so be sure to shop around for the best deal and good luck!

The Fidelity Platinum EW provides coverage from the date of purchase (i.e. when I purchased the policy in Dec 2015, my 2013 X3 was nearly 3 years old and had 24K miles. Therefore, the 6 year/ 72K mile coverage is until Dec 2021 or at 96K miles (whatever comes first).

Why bother, I own a2012 X3 35i fully optioned its just a great vehicle. If I have to pay for something down the road, there is a big chance it will not be anything major.

I'm not one who typically buys extended warranty coverage, but after speaking with 3-4 independent BMW service advisors in my area, I was advised that if I was planning on keeping a BMW beyond 4 years (i.e. beyond the factory warranty period), that they highly recommended purchasing an EW (mind you, these guys were not selling EW policies, rather just familiar with BMW repair histories).

Not surprising since these cars have quite a bit of advanced electronics (dynamic handling and stability control systems, back up camera and front/rear parking sensors, navigation unit, ECU), emission equipment, turbos, ignition coil packs, power windows/sunroof, power/heated seats, etc that will easily cost you a good chunk of change if any one of these items break down or prematurely fail (and the projected average repair cost for X3s over 7-10 years of ownership have been higher than the $2800 cost for the EW).

I am planning to keep my car, X4 35i 2015 maximum 8 years or 100.000 km.
Reason is that we can have insurance for "major fault that will incapacitate vehicle" included in our normal insurance - at a resonable added cost, up to that point.

Planning to keep this vehicle for 8-10 years. For the cost of a service (per year) i am protecting my wallet as much as possible.

I just purchased an additional 2 years warranty coverage from the dealer. Even though I have until Jan 2018, this will extend it until 2020.
Prices were going to rise in June, so I purchased before the increase.

I've been shopping around. We have a '14 X3 with 49,500 miles. Here are the quotes I've received. These are all for the Platinum/third party equivalent that includes navigation and the tech options.

Fidelity:
2 years, add'l 24k miles: $4,400
3 years; add'l 36k miles: $5,500

BMW:
1 year, add'l 20k miles: $3,800
2 years, add'l 20k miles: $4,400
3 years, add'l 20k miles: $4,800
4 years, add'l 50k miles: $5,300

Hendrick:
3 years, add'l 20k miles: $4,352
3 years, add'l 35k miles: $4,737
4 years, add'l 30k miles: $4,577
4 years, add'l 40k miles: $5,123

Note that Fidelity platinum prices (with a $100 or $200 detection) vary significantly from one licensed broker to another. Check the forums and compare prices. I bought mine for significantly less (although at the time, I only had 24k miles). I ended up going with a person in Springfield Mass who came highly recommended.

I am planning to go with Old Republic (now called ORIAS). Their platinum coverage (including tech components) is $3,200 for 5 years/up to 100,000 miles.
