If China is BMW's second largest customer...

is that going to be a good thing for us Bimmer owners? As I was looking for winter rims...I noticed how many cheap BMW knockoff rims are on the Canadian market. Not sure if that's a good thing long term...having the market flooded with rims is not a bad thing but if we start seeing knockoff waterpumps, rads, belts etc.

John,

On this side of the pond a knockoff is an imitation, usually of lesser quality.

In "North American English" a "knockoff" usually means a cheap copy of a brand-name item. When you see a "Hermes" handbag or "Rolex" watch selling for $24.99, it's probably a "knockoff".

I can't remember where I read this but a Chinese car manufacturer came out with a VW knockoff a week before it was released in China. I am sure you saw the YouTube video on the fake Apple store.

Part of the problem IMHO is Western Companies pay Chinese workers so little that a lot of them switch companies quite frequently. Look at GM, they rather have SAAB die as a company rather than sell it to a Chinese company.

Sometimes the quality from China is actually very good. I have no problem with companies making parts...its just when they resell it as genuine parts...right down to the made in Germany. I doubt many aftermarket rim manufacturers have the licensing from BMW to sell you the BMW caps.

Knockoffs are usually not goods stolen from the original manufacturer...however, the intellectual property or design is usually stolen.

My buddy is in the tech business and regularly tracks IP attacks from China on his servers.
