I expect that less cars will be offered with diesel in future, because of more restrictive emission legislation. NOx and PM Particulate Matter limits will be very low, and ultra-low NOx/PM is difficult to achieve with diesel. Unless you use expensive aftertreatment, such as already used by Mercedes Benz for 2014 Euro6 limits, by employing SCR Selective Catalytic Reducion with Adblue urea for NOx reduction and regenerative DPF Diesel Particulate Filter. Maybe even an additional catalytic unit to oxidize unburned volatile matter.
The days to come will be difficult for diesel.

The US-market X5 35d (and the E90 335d), with the M57 engine, uses all of those systems to meet US EPA emission requirements for light-duty diesel engines, which are similar to Euro6. BMW apparently used the US as a sort of beta test site for those systems as the market size is limited at the moment.

Gental A roads - 45mpg
Short hops from cold and town - 35mpg
B road thrash - <30mpg

But the car has only done 300 miles, I guess it will get better, if I keep off the B roads

There is a bit more to it than one drag coefficient, frontal area and other data is calculated into the mix. The actual test procedure is available to read. I've scanned it in the past and probably have it downloaded and backed up somewhere on one of my drives.

The problem with an actual motorway test, you can't repeat it accurately enough. It has to be controllled, hence would have to be in a simulator type environment. Too many variables for an on the road test, if it were to be a benchmark test for comparison.

Just my 2P having just sold the X3 35D M Sport after 1 year and 11K miles.
Short journeys under 15 miles MPG from 25/32.
Longer runs 25+ miles 34/36 MPG.
Thats not working it too hard.

My car has 15,000 km on it and shows an average of 8.2L/100 km, it has no highway miles on it so I'd say that's pretty impressive, it is achieving the same consumption as my 2.0T Audi A3. And coming from a Volvo XC90 2.5T, I must say I am absolutely thrilled when I compare it to the 16L/100km cosumption that car had. Sure its a smaller SUV, but it's still very impressive to me. I have been able to average as low as 6.2L/100km on 20~30 km trips with no traffic and averaging 70 km/h, always city drives.

The BMW figures are misleading as they bear no resemblence to real world driving, see other similar posts on the forum.
My 3.0d has done about 5K and I am getting an overall figure of 35mpg mainly B road journeys and dual carriageways. This is using Eco/stop start and not driving it especially hard.
The thing I noticed was that on motorways and fast dual carriageways the MPG plummets at anything over 70mph, just watch the fuel economy meter. This is the first 4wd BMW I have owned but I was a bit surprised at the 'brick like' profile it appears to exhibit at speed given that it does not have the ride height of say an X5.
Fuel consumption does not appear to have changed much since I had it in mid July, dropped back by about 1mpg I guess due to lower temperatures arising from winter weather.

I managed to get 6.1 L/100 km (47 mpg UK) on a 180 mile trip, but at a ridiculous 46 mph average speed, most of the time I was doing 62 mph, which was really boring, but still I finally came close o the fuel comsumption claimed by bmw.

I have been tracking my MPG on Fuelly for since aquisition - 13,500 miles.
I have averaged 36.2 MPG UK (27.2 US) over that distance.
This includes about 1700 miles towing a caravan (about 23MPG), so the solo average is probably about 38MPG.

The brim to brim Fuelly tracking is consistantly 10-15% better than the in car display reset each time I fill up.

My 30D Msport has the 19 inch staggered wheels.

On Fuelly I can see one other 30D that has a 2k track record of 37.1MPG.

Overall - This is about what I expected.
