Is Cold Weather II necessary?

I'm finalizing my options list so I can submit my order tomorrow for a 2012 X3 xDrive35i in Space Gray Metallic paint, Sand Beige Nevada Leather, and Fineline Sienna Wood Trim. I'm going with Sport Activity, Premium, Technology, and Cold Weather I packages. I've decided to pass on Premium Sound and DHP packages since my wife will be the primary driver and will definitely NOT care about either of them, but I've been on the fence about Cold Weather II which includes rear-seat heating and headlight washers.

From what I read, people who have headlight washers wish they can turn it off, so I'm kinda leaning towards not getting Cold Weather II. However, since we're getting this vehicle because we're expecting our first child, safety is of paramount importance, and having the headlight washers to keep the headlights clean during the winter is comforting to me. That being said, we live in Manhattan, where we receive a decent amount of snow every year, but nothing terrible. Is it worth $450 to pay for a feature that may/may not be materially useful for the vast majority of the year, but will provide peace of mind in the event that we experience a nasty NorEaster?

Thanks in advance.

with the outstanding Bi-xenons or bright white angel eyes, I would not imagine the headlight washers improving safety by any significant means. you should always brush the snow off your head/tail lights either way when you find your car covered with a layer of snow in the winter time. If you could forego with the rear heated seats, I'd put the funds towards some nice weathertech floor mats

headlight washers aren't even available for us Canadians.

I am a fan of the headlight washers. They seem to get the crud off of the lenses, as HID Xenon beams don't heat up like halogen lights.

YOu can turn them off. you can unplug the washer motor. It's behind the fender well on the passenger side.

I unplug mine for the spring, summer, and fall months. I did the same thing on my E83.

I usually coincide the change over at the same time I changed my tires to snow tires.

Total personal preference, however, for what it's worth, this is what I did.

On the F25, I plan to wire in a toggle switch and maybe put it under the hood to prevent me from having to remove the inner fender well. I'll probably do this when I change over the tires.

Good luck!

Can you post a pict or 2 of where this is and how to get to it? i will leave mine on for winter, but can def see unplugging for the non-frozen seasons. My e91 had them and I'm used to them.

my opinion on the cold weather packages - as long as you have front heated seats, the rest is just a bonus, can take or leave - also i think the 40/20/40 rear seat was included in cold weather in 2011 is now standard in 2012, that was the other must have....

If you and your wife are going to be one of those parents who sit in the backseat next to their baby lest they cry for a minute, then the rear heated seats might be nice.

$450? Really? How much do you pay for the car? To park? If you're on the fence, just get it. Clean lights are a good thing. Cleans them more than you'd like? Wow, life is hard . . .

Please help Mr. Walendvay:

How do I get access to disconnect the headlight washer motor. Do I remove the front passenger tire and turn back the wheel liner? It is not accessible from the engine bay.

I can see which plug to disconnect, just not sure how to get access:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...44&hg=61&fg=45

I need to disconnect the headlight washer motor and plug the line. I'm tired of leaking washer fluid in my garage when it drops below 20 F. I don't really have a local dealer....

Thanks!

I am your neighbor in Connecticut and I recommend you get cold weather II. This latest snow and cold snap made me glad I have it. The heated seats in this car are awesome and having them in the rear is a nice addition. You will love this car whatever you decide.

I figure for 450 bucks it'll be worth it if you, your family, friends, etc hop in that backseat on a cold day and go "wow heated rears!" What the heck, may as well get it.

It's great to have just for the heated rear seating. However your bundle of joy that you're having will not be able to enjoy the heated seats for a long time and you may not have the car that long.

At only $450 I've learned that the more options you get helps selling it faster due to all the toys.

Good luck

I passed on the Cold Weather II package but did opt for the premium sound. I'm a big fan of Sat radio and I have two car seats in the back so no need for heated rear seats.

I got CWII because no little kids anymore and since we travel with friends often, I'd like them to be comfortable in NE Winter .

I've never had a heated steering wheel and it's a sweet option that comes with CW 11. I've always had heated seats and would never go without.

I ended up getting the HUD and lane departure warning which prevents you from getting CWII. This past December I with friends in the back I wish I had opted for CWII.

I have cw2 with no regrets. I find xenons on my past vehicle do not heat enough to melt snow from the headlamps effectively. The jet washers come in handy. The heated seats are very useful when parked outside for long periods of time. This is especially if you are feeling kinda sick.

Heated rear seats are a $2500 option on the Canadian models since heated rear seats are only available with leather seating surfaces. Leather seats are not included in the premium pkg here.

I was not aware that those features were incompatible.

1) Wow that is the last time I type a response on my ipad.

2) Unfortunately those two options can not be selected together. I think the motor that vibrates the wheel when you've departed your lane interferes with the heated wheel. I found that the hard way after selecting pretty much every option on the car and being called last minute by the dealer telling me I can't have cold weather II and the lane departure at the same time.
