I have recently hit 6,000 miles and have noticed over the last week a very definitive loosening of the engine.

It is picking up so much quicker and 4th gear (manual box) is just awesome all the way from 30 to 85 mph. So much torque it just flies.

Has anyone else noticed this. makes me think the 30d engine must be special.

You should try the 35D M Sport I have on order, it will fly.

Thanks for sharing, besides the improved performance, any improvement in smoothness and refinement? Mine is at 2700 miles so still a long way to go...

I find with the 3.0D I have to "manage" the turbo rather like the way I used to an RS Turbo I had in the 80's. Though here it's as much about being in the right gear (auto box) as it is having the turbo spinning fast. Leaving it in sport most of the time is the easiest way but if I've been driving gently in "normal" I have to remember that torque does not come quickly the way it does in sport. The 3.5D should be a little better but as I say it's as much about the auto box as it is the engine. Now that I've done 1,200 miles I'll be in sport a lot more. It does shift, that's for sure!

Yes I think it is getting smoother too.

The only downside of this is that my mpg has dropped to 37 from 40 plus as I want to put my foot down more and more.

I am going to be sick - no diesel X3s in the US. It really f_________ p_________ me off! that we only have two diesel options over here and we make the X5s and X3s!!!!

I am regularly getting mid 30s on urban trips and 39mpg when roads are quiet. And I have a 3.0d. And yes, you do have to manage the power as you surge past looking down on those bewildered GTIs and new Siroccos! So far I have only been overtaken is queuing traffic and that is not due to defensive driving, simply that you have a better view, quicker response and oodles of power.

Why o why did i not wait for the 30d

With just 1200 miles on my 30D I get 34mpg around town once the engine is warm, mid to high 20's for the first couple of miles. On a recent run on the M6 I drove like a nun for 60 miles, got 43 mpg from an average 65mph. I then drove normally, ie briskly on A roads and 80 ish on motorways, the result was 37 mpg over 330 miles. I'm sure mpg will improves further but I'm pleased with it already.

Although too long a wait in my case having placed my order a year ago. I think I'd have to see the fuel economy for myself because I'm staggered by people averaging 42mpg in the 20d. I guess it depends if you commute and spend a lot of time in traffic at around 50-60mph on relatively long trips. I'm on about 34mpg average and I know that would come down further in the 30d. Would still opt for 30d if ordering now

My fuel economy experience is similar to this, but in a 20d with 6000 miles. Can probably get 42mpg if not exceeding 70mph much and if relatively flat

If I drive from Nottm to Leeds (80-90 miles, mostly 70-80mph, but urban/extra urban driving for 5-10 miles at each end) I get 42-44mpg in my 20d. I use cruise at 77mph as my 'normal' motorway speed. Mines done 4,500 miles.

I can't say I've noticed mine loosening or doing anything much different from day one so far. It has plenty of power up to around 60-70mph but acceleration after that is not so great, that's when the 30d would have a big benefit I suppose.

Maybe they have some sort of "breaking in" mode which reduces things and maybe uses more fuel than necessary. At least Volkswagen AG all brands have such thing.

By the way, are you using Imperial Gallons or US liquid gallons in MPG?

That's very similar to what I am getting with the 20d . Around 4,000 miles driven so far. X3 30d is surely an impressive option in its class , but sadly is not imported in Turkey probably because of the sales taxes almost doubling over any 2 liter engine options. Therefore X3 30d price would be almost equal to a similarly loaded X5 30d (100,000 Euros) , so the importer thinks it wouldn't sell.
