Phonebook updates...

My recently acquired Droid RAZR MAXX HD integrates well (e.g. stays paired, connects consistently). It doesn't do any e-mail that I could see but does receive text/SMS. One thing that's strange and I'm wondering if it is normal and whether people with other phones might also experience it:

Each time I start the vehicle (even if stopped for only a couple of minutes), the phonebook does an update. I guess I can understand that, but the update takes what seems to be ~ 7 min. Normal? Anyone else have any similar, or other, experience?

Hi Noka,

I have a Samsung III and my wife has a II....this happens to us as well each time the car is shut off/on. I've never timed how long it takes to update the contacts, but I guess I could say it's easily at least 2 minutes. I guess the software just assumes that there will always been new contact updates each time the phone is connected via bluetooth, whether or not the car has been off for 1 minute or days....

Dave

My wife had a similar problem with her iphone, and I was able to fix the long update times by cleaning up lots of phone numbers that were not well formatted - like email addresses or names or strange characters that were in the phone number field of many contacts.

We have nav on our 3series and the e-mail function is only compatible with BlackBerry, not iPhone or Droid.

Email/SMS feature of BMW Office should be working with the iPhone, iOS 6 added the required Bluetooth profile (MAP). Some android phones work if manufacturer added it but Bluetooth MAP support is not native in android.

If anyone out there in Android-land has gone the custom route and is using Cyanogenmod 10.1, I just spent the past three days working with a developer and with the nightly build from tonight (6/2), we now have full BMW Office support: I can send/get SMS messages and phone book entry pictures also work. For everyone else, HOPEFULLY Android 4.3 will catch up.

Oh and edit: to the OP-the fixes I just mentioned above makes the phone book update go from what took me about 2 minutes, down to less than 30 seconds, and that includes sync of all of my SMS messages too!

Thanks for the info. A few random replies, in no particular order:

- I have a very small contact list (e.g. under 50). It has e-mail and addresses but no characters I would consider strange.
- I get thumbnail images on Nav screen when making a call (but they don't show up unless the phonebook update is complete).
- I get SMS messages (only if received while phone is connected, not for any already received before connection). The text to speech works with the SMS.
- I don't get any e-mail messages.

I'm not so bold as to root my phone or try custom firmware. My RAZR MAXX HD currently runs JB 4.1.2. I guess I'll just wait for future updates to see if anything changes and hopefully the long time required for phonebook and SMS message updates will be reduced.
