Thanks rs6655..... Never thought of that. I checked last night but the carpet was dry... However, it's been about 2 or 3 weeks since I put fluid in so it could have dried. I'll try another "fill and watch" test.

You're welcome.

I disconnected my rear hose at the pump and capped the outlet over a year ago because of all the reported problems. Some have said that merely unplugging the the pump will stop the flow but that's not true. The fluid will flow right through the inactive pump. All you have to do is rotate the black collar on the hose connector and it will come right off. I used a rubber cap with a small zip tie for a clamp to make sure the cap doesn't come off.

2008 MT 32k miles ticking lifters but otherwise this one is everything the 2007 AT was not. A great ride.

From the other forums I gather these are suspension problems as this is much more than a standard sporty suspension, this is bounce things into ceiling and lose your coffee rocky as well as the AT problems.

I am very disappointed. These cannot be designed into the car as: 1. others do not have these problems, 2. they are really, really bad on a brand new car.

Dollars to donuts this is PPXYZ from bimmerfest. Complains a lot but does nothing about it. Several of us have offered advice, help, and what has s/he done about it to resolve the problem.........dead silence.

We live in rural central Florida. The closest Starbucks is about 15 miles away. And we like Starbucks alot!!! The Mall is about the same distance.

We also ride a local bike trail http://www.floridastateparks.org/gainesville-hawthorne/ two or three days a week and it's 27 miles from our house to the trailhead.

And we're retired and have taken many multi state road trips in it.

I am looking at a used 2004 x3 with 95,000 miles. I have not yet had the vehicle inspected by an independent mechanic, but the owner claims it is in good condition.

What kind of problems could I expect to see running into at this mileage? I would rather not purchase the vehicle if it is going to be problematic.

A few annoyances

Radio mutes .... Is there a mute button I don't know of? No audio at all including via Bluetooth but all lights are on etc

Also passenger seat airbag light and beeping is sporadic with or without anyone being in the seat!

Sunroof knocking noise when opening.

Side mirror doesnt go back to position when car is unlocked.

None of these the dealer has been able to successfully fix.

Annoyances indeed!

Other than the annoying check engine light that comes on due to extreme shifts in outdoor temperature, no. I love our X3 and especially love driving it on the highway.

I hate to say this, but my 04 X3 is the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned. I ordered mine in Feb of 2004 and got one of the first ones in the US. BIG MISTAKE!

Problems:
1. At approx 5K miles with my wife driving, X3 died on the highway. X3 eventually restarted. No codes were thrown and BMW could not find out what was wrong.

2. Again, at approx 8K miles with my wife driving, X3 died on the highway. X3 restarted. No codes were thrown and BMW could not find out what was wrong.

3. Again at approx 11K miles, with me driving this time, X3 died on the highway. It would idle, but that was about it. It had no power at all. X3 restarted properly after 10 minutes. No codes were thrown and BMW could not find out what was wrong. This time, I remembered which idiot lights came on, 4X4, ABS, and traction control. After BMW emailed Germany, they determined the DSC computer was bad. It thought I was spinning my tires and retarded the timing so bad the car would not move.

4. At 26k miles, went through my first clutch.

5. Since mile 1, the moon roof rattled so bad that I could not open it above 45 MPH. I brought it back 4 times over 80K miles and each time, they made it worse. The 5th time they redid all the weather stripping, causing it to leak so bad that I had to bail out the wells in the far back every time it rained. At 80K miles (off warranty) I demanded a new moon roof and they put in a new one. However the air leaks are now so bad I have to close the sun shade to quiet it. BMW will not do anything to fix this issue.

6. At 45K miles, I noticed the drivers seat (leatherette) was stretching on the drivers side seat bolster. When I complained to BMW, they said there was nothing wrong and did nothing. At 52K miles (off warranty) the fake leather delaminated from the cloth under it and 1/2 of the side bolster lost its fake leather. Since I was 2K miles off warranty, BMW would do nothing other than quote $1800 for a new drivers side vinyl seat cover.

7. At 66K miles, the air bag computer went bad costing me $1300.

8. At 70K, first battery gone bad costing me almost $300.

9. At 80K miles, second battery went bad. costing me $225.

10. At 90K miles, DSC computer gone bad again costing me $1700.

11. At 100K miles, another clutch gone, all 4 brakes also gone costing me almost $7000

12. At 105K miles, AC stopped working and had to recharge at $300. BMW could not find any leaks.

13. At 105K miles, car appears to be skipping badly. Got a tune up and did not fix the problem, cost me $800. Turned out to be old oil in the differential causing a slip. Cost me $400.

13. At 110K miles, broke left back spring costing me $600.

14. At 110K miles, AC stopped working again. cost me $450 for a new seal and $300 to recharge. They also found a leak under the dash and quoted a price of $2900 to fix the AC properly.

15. At 112K miles (yesterday), left side back drivers window won't go up or down but vibrates its way all the way down after 10 miles of driving. Seems to me that the motor is no longer connected to the window. I had to tape the window up.

16. At 112K miles, had to replace the valve cover gasket, $400

I will never own any BMW again. Once it got off warranty, I have spent approx $12300 on repairs and another estimated $4700 in quotes to fix the drivers seat and AC. Right now I have no idea how much the window will cost me. So if I wanted to fix everything, I will have spent $17000 in repairs over 7 years and 112K miles.

Ironically, I also own a 93 Nissan 300ZX and it has a reputation of being a money pit. In 16 years and 150K miles I have put on it, I have replaced front brakes 3 times, clutch once, no rear brakes, 1 O2 sensor, 1 alternator, and fuel injectors, 2 batteries, for a combined cost of approx $3900 and there is absolutely nothing now wrong that still needs to be fixed.

I love driving my X3, it handles great and sounds like a sports car. But once you get off warranty, you are opening your wallet to the service department.

More problems with my 04 X3. There is a DISA valve in the air intake that went bad, causing the intake boot to implode. Costs $600 TO FIX.

My X3 is the biggest piece of S**T I have ever owned, see my above post.

X3 issues

I've owned 2 X3's both 2ltr diesels and both have given me some major repair bills, but overall they are great cars. Shame BMW main dealers charge so much and never went to charm school.

Both are 05 SE models. Issues I had are as follows

Car 1 (87k)

1, Mass Meter failure. £500
2, Swirl flap failure. £2500
3, Diff failure £2200
4, Rear springs Failure £350
5, Hand brake failure £300
6, Standard 17" wheels, tires £150 a shot for the so called BMW approved brands.
7, Brakes all round £700

Car 2 (58k)

1, Electric mirror and window failure £200 so far.
2, Diff about to die.
3, Leaking water seal on rear door - foot well fills up in stormy weather.
4' leather on side of seat cracking £200 to patch.
5, 18" alloys tires £250 a shot for the so called BMW approved brands.
6, wheels well looked after but paint still lifting.
Due front discs and pads Wheels need refurb and diff. All going to be very costly.

Ask the main agent for advice and they want large amounts of cash before they will comment, always quoting book it in and we will have a look at the cost of £120 per hour.

Old thread but i'm bimmer newbie! Picked up my 08 X3 today, drove like a dream back home from the dealership but couldn't get my iPhone 4s to play music when connected to aux port. Hope it's something obvious that I'm not doing..hate the prospect of having just spent all ths money on a car & not even be able to listen to my music!

Great thread.. My x3 2007 has now 104k miles.. Overall I love the car, warranty has expired two months back.

Several annoyances:
Power folding mirrors stopped working, dealer replaced..
Headlight washer pump replaced
Heated seats shorted out and burnt holes in the seat, and eventually my pants..

Valve cover and ream main seal leak, trying to get BMW to fix that under warranty.
Doing breaks all the way around, noticed rear half shaft oil leak. Will get that done shortly.

Besides these issues, the car is solid. Feels like I can get another 100k out of it..had 2013 x3 loaner several weeks back and like first gen handling better..

I bought my 2004 2.5 in mid-January with 92,000 miles on the odometer. It had been a little bit neglected, but after replacing the front headlight assembly, the window master switch, changing the oil, and servicing the transfer case, we are up to speed. The Reno dealership has been great, replacing the airbag sensor under the passenger seat. They also found and corrected a fault with the xenons. I LOVE THIS CAR! It is responsive and fun to drive. I look forward to many happy miles before I upgrade into another X3.

Oh no! I use the power folding mirrors & heated seats on mine everytime! At what point did these go on yours? Did you use the heating in the seats every time?
