Open air filter a bad idea on X3?

I'm used to my three turbocharged Saabs where I exclusively used K&N filters unrestricted (no air box). I'm assuming the ECU is tuned to a specific setting and an open air filter will probably cause performance issues by throwing off the expected air/fuel ratio?

Can anyone corroborate?

If you are trying to make it louder, then yes it will do that. Other than that, save your money, use good quality paper filters and drive the car.
