X3 xdrive28i wins a comparo against Q5 and Evoque

Car and Driver 03/2013.

Pricey, but most fun-to-drive.

I knew this was going to happend. Test drove évoque and q5, they just feel big and heavy to lug around.

I believe it was an x1 in the comparison.

Nope, X3 in C and D. One of the other mags did a similar comparison using the X1 (which I thought was interesting)...in that comparison they treated the Evoque like a big wagon...and the Audi Allroad (i.e. a tall wagon) won (beating out the X1 in second place I believe).

They commented that one of the negatives was looooong distances when braking and that it was similar to what they have been experiencing with recent BMW vehicles. They said it might be attributable to the Goodyear tires.

Does anyone think their stopping distances are excessive?

Nop, fortunately I haven't done many panic stop comparisons in my X3.

I also find the Evoque extremely pricey as far as selecting option goes. I do like the exterior but not a fan of its interior. I drove a Nissan Leaf (electric) that had the same gearshift as Evoque!...just not really what you expect to see in a $60-80k vehicle...
Q5? it is already old.
So, X3 is definitely the obvious choice.

I've not found a good comparison video. My opinion from researching these vehicles more than a human should. YMMV

Things I've found in my research about the Q5 that I like and that distinguish it from the X3:
The Navi is better liked by owners and has Google Maps integrated into it.
Monster front grill and intakes standard
You don't have to pay $2500 for a masculine looking front end deletion of the cheap looking black plastic body parts and rear bumper
Generally accepted better looking rear end
Hybrid powertrain available with performance of a V6
TDI powertrain arriving this summer
The window line stays straight at the C pillar like the X5
Doesn't force you to use run-flats. Has a compact spare.
2-way adjustable rear seats
Larger storage capacity
Only $500 to get sports seats

Things I like about the Evoque that distinguish it from the X3:
All exteriors designs look great
Interior design
Customizable roof color
Killer gear shifter
Off road capability

Things I like about the X3:
Kidney grille
DHP
Foot activated rear hatch
More compact rear compartment privacy cover

We also researched a ton and test drove multiple times...the X3 is just the most fun to drive and that was our number one criteria. Evoque was the slowest of the bunch and was ruled out because of the fixed sunroof that doesn't crack or open at all (seriously RR?). Loved how it looked inside and out though.

Q5 was close but ultimately when you begin adding options it's in x3 price territory. Also the Audi just wasn't as quick or fun, felt less agile, and the sales guy was a jerk. Also very "we don't really discount these cars" holier than thou BS. He kept referring to the discount as a "courtesy adjustment" which was very condescending made me feel less than wanted. Finally after deciding that if we were to go X3 we would get the M package, honestly the Q5 looks like a minivan in comparison. One big bubble, wifey didn't love it.

So we went with the most fun, agile, best looking (besides the XC60-r IMO, but that was ruled out for other reasons), and equally equipped car of the 3. Unfortunately most expensive, but not by much.

I do. It's the first thing I noticed when I got my X3. Thee brakes are not up to bmw standards.

My wife's X5 has a much firmer pedal feel, as did all my E90s, E46, etc.

Edmunds says: "xDrive35i stopped from 60 mph in 123 feet, which is an average distance for the segment." Anyone have statistics to compare?

I do intend to test drive other X3s at the dealer to see if mine is abnormal. Maybe there's some air in the lines, and a good bleed would fix it.
