2011 X3 28i Engine Designation - N52T
I have searched forum archives and elsewhere, and cannot nail down what the "T" stands for in the N52T designation. I have been down a worrisome path that showed this engine to be one used in a 5 series (the article was for a BMW in Sri Lanka). It professed to be 2.8 litres and just over 200 horsepower. When I bought this X3 in February, it was sold to me as a 3.0 litre, 240 horsepower car. Can anyone help me with the "T" designation or with any other information that would show me how to confirm my 2011 X3 28i F25 N52T is really the 240 horsepower version? Thanks, sam

When I bought the car, there was some differing info on when this car was built. Carfax had it built in mid 2010, whereas BMW was adamant that it was not built until Oct 2011. Additionally, Carfax showed it as already having been owned, while the dealer swore to me it had never been titled, and had only been driven (without titling) by a BMW executive. I told them of my skepticism, and they provided me with a copy of a Warranty Vehicle Inquiry, which confirmed the in-service date (the date it came off the line) as Oct 2011. Along with that info was the Motor Type designation of N52T. I have been going on the belief that the Carfax is incorrect, however, this closer reading of the Vehicle Warrant Inquiry (finding the "T" suffix) has me concerned.

Never seen the "T" designation on an X3 before, but the N52T is a 3.0L engine that is cut down to 2.5L displacement, much like the N52 2.8L. N52T is rated at 201hp while the 2.8L is rated at 240hp.
The "T" designation is probably just a mistake as it doesn't appear to have ever been used in an X3. |

Even I noticed that F25 28i engine is referred as N52T in the latest TSB issued by BMW for "Delay in Engine Response"...may be the 'T' stands for increased Torque since the NA 3.0L in a 2011 3-series produces 230hp/200lbft of torque where as the X3 is producing 240hp/221lbft of torque?

Still not sure about the "T".
Yes, I have booked an appointment with my dealer (Herb Chambers) on Monday morning for the s/w update. |

All 6 cylinder F25 X3 xdrive28i vehicles are equipped with the N52T. The 'T' in the engine designation stands for 'Technical Update', as the engine in the X3 has been updated from the one used in other vehicles.

Dropped my car for service this morning, and SA told me it will be ready by evening. I forgot to book a loaner car and they gave me a Dodge Charger from Enterprise...

Well the Dodge will make you appreciate the BMW more... Looking forward to hearing how the service went and if there is a noticeable change. I feel like some days the throttle delay is there, some days it isn't.

Just picked up the car from the dealer and I can feel the substantial improvement while short driving back home, 'D' responds like 'DS' and I should adjust to that in heavy Boston traffic.
I did try 'DS' mode and embarrassed an Audi TT driver.... I am convinced with the s/w update. |
