Rain water
My wife has a 2006 X3 which has a rain water leak somewhere. After a good rain the carpet and mat on the driver's side rear floor is soaked with rain water. It appears to be coming in from the bottom of the door panel. I can see where the water is coming in on the plastic piece at the bottom of the seat and continues to run to the floor pan. The map pocket is dry........ the window is not open as It's a consistent problem. Also, she parks in our driveway which is a slight incline (front of the vehicle pointing up). I'm going to point it downhill for the next rain and see if it still leaks. Has anyone had this kind of water leak ?? Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks.........

It's most likely the vapor barrier in the door.

Thanks for responding. Sure sounds like that's the problem....... Wonder why BMW doesn't seal it better from the factory. Anyway, I'll check it out and report back.

Poor design. Have never had this issue in the 20 + vehicles I have owned, but it is what it is. If it is torn or the seal is broken you will get a small pond in your X3. The vapor barrier costs all of about $18 and the sealant you can get from any car shop. If you are hand DIY is best as cealers will charge several hundred dollars or more to do this. Kind of a scam if you ask me, but like I said. It is what it is and not hard to fix. |

Thanks for the additional responses. I still haven't had a chance to do this job yet. Meantime, I change the bath towel I have weged between the bottom of the door panel and the side on the seat after every rain (which we've had a lot of recently). My neighbors laugh and say their Hondas and Toyotas are dry as a bone inside when they see me changing towels......

it's an easy fix. I had window regulators in my rear doors replaced a while ago. I am guessing the "fix" disturbed the seal.
I popped the door panels off, added a little more sealant to the area where it was leaking, then duct taped the barrier to the door with Gorilla Duct Tape. It's good for a long while now! Cheaper than buying a new rig! |
