Why is the X3 limited to 130MPH?

The new X3 30d is electronically limited to 130mph and I assume this is due to the xDrive system but why?
Thanks in advance!

I thought if you got the sport package or the 19 inch wheels, you got a top speed of 150...

I had read that too. If you have the SAP, your top limiter is increased to 150.

Oh right so they have just limited it to 130MPH because they can? Also, what is "SAP?"

What is the point in all these limitations? A German agreement says all German cars should be limited to 155MPH and indeed all Series BMW's are where the engine is capable. The 30d is more than capable of 155MPH so what is the reason for these restrictions?

Maybe it's so they can specify cheaper tyres to make running costs stats lower and therefore the car more attractive in the mags.

I've driven race cars at over 275 kph and have the SAP on my 35i, but can't think of any reason I'd want to drive a X3 at over 130 mph. Of course, having a car that "only" goes 130 mph, doesn't sound very macho during a "cafe" racing session (even if the typical owner never has driven at more than 80 mph, and will likely, NOT stop to properly re-inflate the tires for operation at those speeds).

Yeah we take every precaution before traveling at speed!

I believe that even with the SAP the 28 is still limited to 130 mph....you need the "sport automatic transmission" in the 35i or with DHP (I think) to get the 150 mph limit.

But....are we really going to drive that fast?

Actually let me update my own post.....I'm actually 99% sure that the ability for the X3 to go to 150 MPH is only in the 35i not the 28i...and in the 35i you need the sport automatic tranny to do so. If the sport auto tranny can be selected in the 28 then you can probably get the 150 limit...but I am pretty sure that's only in the35i..

35i with sap only goes 130. I tested. I imagine it is m sport that gets you 150.

Weird on the speed thing....I have not tested so I won't disagree, but everythign I have read on the 35i with SAP states that the tranny is unhooked to go to 150 b/c it's the sport auto tranny. M sport is pretty much a cosmetic upgrade...not a true M package...and the M sport uses the same exact tranny setup as the 35i.

I'll have to find some info on it b/c that's weird...totally contradicts everything I've read through BMW

Ok this is only edmunds and not BMWNA, but if you go out and google X3 reviews, every single one will reference the 150 top speed with SAP. I'll find you something BMW related that says 150

You are correct. From everything I have read, it is only the 35i equipped with the SAP that has the increased limit, not the 28i.

Also...look at the tires that come on your X3.

If they are V rated, then they go to 150MPH...if H rated 130....another indication...BMW would match the tires to the car's top speed.

I'm still looking for something from BMWNA on this

LMAO...yea totally.... and honestly I'd rather hear the story of you driving 130 rather than the additional 20 MPH to 150!!!

LMFAO.... holy cr@p that was funny... and true. I don't think I'll have mine over 100 let alone 130 or 150. I mean it handles great and all, but its still too high off the ground for me to drive it that fast. Maybe 110mph ok?

This is just one of those threads where we get too caught up in the details and forget about reality! I've had my wife's mini-van up to 90 MPH once...I would have put it over 100 but she woke up and said "what the f**k are you doing"??

And NO...the kids were NOT in the car for that...I'm not supid! (entirely)

You flaming me??? LMAO...just kidding!

Hey man...with 2 young kids the mini-van is pretty much a requirement, and honestly my kids think that it's the coolest car on the road so when I'm with them that's what matters!! And yo I roll with a sienna...2011 so it's no slacker...I'm sure I can do 110 in that...not sure how I can pull that off though without getting in trouble! (seriously the thing is awesome on the highway...)

Now granted....when I pull away in the sienna the STI scoffs at me and I have to turn my head... Now the worst part is that the mini-van is parked on one side of the garage with the single car, and my STI and the X3 will share the other side with the 2 car setup...and now when I pull away in the sienna those two are going to scoff at me together and make fun!! Funny sh*t
