ReturnZero thanks so much for a great post. We just picked up a 2016 X3 and, like everyone else, wanted to remove the phone cradle to increase the center console usable space. I know in 2024, there probably aren't too many people still looking for this information, but it worked great. I followed the original instructions and then pulled and disconnected the cables as described by roadkillrob. I actually wrapped all three of the disconnected cables with thin neoprene foam self adhesive sheets, to prevent any future rattling, before tucking them away. Probably overkill, but I had car rattles.
In retrospect, I should have done as Rob described. After Step 3, I should have jumped to Step 8, clipping the zip tie, and then I should have disconnected the cables, as described by Rob. After that, the entire center console tray, including the phone cradle, would be easily removed. Then continue from Step 10, moving the USB and 12 Volt to the new center console tray. By doing it this way, you would end up with a fully intact center console tray and phone cradle that could be sold on eBay. And much to my surprise, there are a few listed for around $60, with a couple of completed auctions in the past few months. |
