Door Hinges

So I've had my car for about two weeks now and I'm loving it. The car handles well and has great power from pretty much 1.5k rpm to redline, it's a blast to drive. Other than the artificial steering feel, even in sport mode and the lack of a diffuser on the panoramic moonroof the X3 is all around a good car.

So now to the real topic, I have a question about the door hinges and why there's a styrofoam-like material in them. Originally I had thought that they were there in order to reduce wind noise or to seal that car better but I noticed that the back doors don't have them and I've never seen a car with them before. The material is glued on and not bolted, it comes off easily but I'm not too worried about it accidentally tearing off. Anyone know what's the purpose for this?

Sorry for the picture quality I just took it off my phone.

Mine has them as well. I've wondered the same thing. I just thought it was possibly for sound dampening or engine noise control.

I noticed it too. I don't see how this could last the life of the car.

Having a black X3 I never noticed till now! Now the hunt begins to find out what the purpose is!
