The better question to ask is why NOT buy a diesel?
only two I can think of is $$$ (diesels cost more than comparable petrol versions) or if you don't have Diesel stations around you. If the new 35D is offered in the US and for $3K or less premium to the 35i, there is no reason not to buy the Diesel, especially if we get a ~$1500 tax credit! speaking for US buyers of course. |

In the UK company car tax pushes nearly all drivers to diesel due to lower Co2emissions and better mpg

Did you perhaps mean "50ppm Euro 5 Spec"? - 50ppm Diesel normally means longer service intervals due to less sulphur oil contamination and is also more Diesel Particulate Filter friendly. If you are going to use in Nairobi - ask the dealer and/or check whether similar vehicles are driving around. Buy diesel from reputable service station with high sales turnover to prevent filling with older fuel which may be water contaminated - or heaven forbid - paraffin diluted...Regards.
