I think the idea of an X4 could be very cool. If they could make it like a mini X6 that would be awesome. I would love to get an X6 now but $65k+ makes it wayy to expensive for an SUV for me.

QUOTE: "Besides, there are two more engines coming for the X3. It appears that BMW is preparing a new diesel engine and a new petrol engine, both to make the X3 accessible to a broader customer pool. No word if these engines will be available in the US, though."
Am not happy about this as I want to order a new x3 with the strongest diesel engine, currently it would be 3.0d with 258hp (still not available, only in 2nd quarter 2011, am afraid as soon as a place the order in Jan 2011 in two months time there will be an x3 with 3.5d or 3.5ds engine mark delivering 302hp or smthg similar and have features (like foglight deletion etc.). There are constant changes and developments which is good but BMW should slow down a bit and announce more at the same time, bcs it is not making me (and a lot of others) happy that they are constantly improving, while at the same time reducing the current value and satisfaction of current cars their loyal customers have bought. This can be seen in the idrive, you get an i-drive and then there is like 100 times improved version in a month or so. I buy cars for 2 to 4 years (more on the 4 years side) and am loosing tons of money when I sell them in particular to these constant changes made.

The X4 will be engineered to match how the X6 is very different to drive from the X5, now that the X6 is established (original projections for the X6 at this time period were at 40,000 units , we have almost surpassed three times that amount. But we have discovered an opening for a smaller Sport Activity Coupe.

One thing learned about the X6 though is that customers would prefer a more seperate identity than the X5. X4 and X6 will introduce this new approach although undeneath they will still be based on the X3 and X5 respectively.

New design details established on the X1 and the new X3 such as sculpted surfaces and higher rear window line will move to the X5 and X6 also new to the X5 will be T-Shaped rear lights from the X3 as they move to give X vehicles typical X characteristics and visually seperate them from the road car portfolio.

X4, X5 and X6 will build upon BMW's latest design philosophy in which wheelarches are defined by making them more three-dimensional , instead of building them out by adding more technicality and un-needed lines. The X5 for example uses the same but a more dramatic angle "slash" through the front doors from the wings , ahead of this the front quarter of the car is more pronounced expanding the width of the car and especially the wheel arches , a similar line at the rear does the same expanding the rear wheel arches. This is important for the interior in which space is increased and suspension mountings are pushed out without compromising interior space. X4 will do something similar but it will keep a bloodline with the X3 although the front and rear will be seperate designs.

Although you dont like it but X sales in X1, X3(E83), X5 (E53),(E70) and X6 have been highly profitable for BMW. Advance orders for Europe are sold out until spring on the new F25 X3 , The X1 continues to surpass it's projections and next year the M-Sport Packet will help further sales with the X1 , X6 receives it's Life Cycle Impulse,, on the back of high sales whilst the LCI X5 has proved to be the best selling SAV of it's segment. MINI Countryman in parts of europe is sold out until April 2011.

As for a smaller Sport Activity Coupe based on the X1? It is under consideration but could form part of the Lifestyle orientated "Y" Concept under development which takes the essence of the original X Coupe concept mixing a Z with an X although exclusively with 2drs.

The "Y" also has scope for expansion especially with a 2dr shooting brake type car and maybe an open air X vehicle. Interesting enough is that although it is labeled "Y" because of the proximity to "X" and "Z". Discussion has ranged on calling the car "K" due to the "half "X" in which the Y is a Z vehicle fused with an X vehicle - half and half.

For the time being though MINI will extend it's Countryman with a more sporting Activity Coupe which looks as if it will arrive in both 2dr and 4dr with double rear-hinged doors to add to it's uniqueness. The MINI will be aimed at the Range Rover Evoq with the intent to match it's style but not at the same price. This picture especially from the front doors back to the rear is an indication of how the car is progressing , the concepts and ideas are similar, especially the roof line.

MINI Activity Coupe , BMW X4 and the "Y" project are all projects of BMW's strategy aimed at the growing Compact and Premium entry segments which are heading for increased growth.

Hmmmmm the black and white render had a lot of promise, but not loving the front of this red render. The angel eyes are too thin/squinty, looks like the front of the new x3 that is trying hard to see something that is out of focus.

While this is all great, can we maybe have a better render from YOU. This render has none of the design cues, you have said will be on this up and coming X-Car. Thanks!

Bring X3 diesel to US, the one with 300hp and gobs of torque. Would match that SUV perfectly.

(assuming you want are set on the 335i and not a 328i)
But for that matter, more than likely, if you were looking for a vehicle with the Sport package or with a 6 manual transmission, for example, and the dealership didn't have those in stock it would similarly cost them a sale. Yet certainly you are not going to argue that the 3 series equipped with the Sport Package or the manual transmission are seperate models from the non-ZSP or Steptronic models, right? Thus it is a fallacy to say that the criteria that distinguishes which car a consumer may accept vs. one they will reject when shopping for the car they wish to purchase is the same set of criteria that should be used to determine what constitutes distinct models.

Another way to see the fault in your logic consider a garden variety cars like the Toyota Camry. Certainly we don't consider the V6 Camry a separate model from the four cylinder Camry, correct? A Camry is a Camry. And we still would not consider them seperate models even if they called one the Camry-4 and the other the Camry-6, for example.

The typical "Sport Activity Coupe" outline in that sketch above which is similar to the X6 is closer to the overall look of the car.
The "official" sketch is just a preliminary X3 sketch from the designer in which it was chosen to go forward to produce a scale model.

But the odd and even X models will begin to seperate in design identity in the future.

I like the X3 and X5, despite the X3 being (where I live) pretty much the "go to" car for every rich-sororistitue. Its telling to see the activity on the BMW forums. . look at how many people post on e90post, and look at hte activity on the x3 and x5 forums. .

I drive an X1 23d with sports suspension and larger wheels. When I was ordering it I really wanted an M Sport version, but at the time it was not available . I've owned the car since April and am thinking of either having the new X1 M panels retro fitted when they become available or going the AC Scnitzer route inc a power upgrade. However the Y version of the X1 or perhaps the X4 sound very interesting

I've looked at the X1 from every angle and it's looks grow on you over time, but I think (IMO) that round wheel arches and three doors with the front doors being slightly longer, plus an aero body kit would make it a truly stunning vehical to look at. If you changed the bonnet and tailgate to aluminium it would reduce weight and along with the other changes should reduce cost. The look would be similar to a 'pumped up' VW G40 or modern version of the Scimitar

I would love to buy an X3 M if it offers a turbo 400+ HP, which it should have if they do make a X3 is, otherwise what would be the point of the M? It would be like if they made a 135 is, what would you do with it? X3 M would probably be the same price as an M3, but would allow them to get rid of the sedan like they are planning, you want 4 doors, buy the SUV version, which would be my plan, 2 kids, I need a bigger car, but still would love the power and agility of a M. For the haters out there, get over it, BMW wants to make money, hitting every niche market allows them, they made a killing on the X6 even though tons of people hate it. They are also making good money on the X5M and X6M cars, build it and people will buy it.

Only other problem is where do you make an X3 M since all production is in the US for that car, they aren't set up in Germany to build them, buliding the shell here, shipping it out there and shipping it back would be a huge cost.

I woulda bought an "X4" in a heartbeat. The F25 was the closest thing to that concept available.

I have to concur with Mako above, BMWs current pricing structure blends the cars too close together. Optioning out a base model leads you to the next level and into the next model car. I don't know how they can market 6+ versions of the same car.

There will always be people buying the latest and greatest but in 6-12 months it will be outdated just like a new computer.

Hmmm, wonder how their sales do so well with their marketing so far off. Odd.

Seems to be proportional to the US economy.

What does that mean?

Do you suppose it's possible that those doing marketing and product development for BMW actually investigated the issue a bit and found a market for those cars? I mean, their livelihood depends on it so they might have checked it out a bit before defining the model line-up. Or you could have unique insight into it and they spent millions going the wrong direction. One or the other.
