Winter Tire Pressure
The weather is getting cold here in New Jersey so I took off my 19" M Sport Staggered Wheel Set and put on my 18" winter set from Tire Rack. This is my first winter with the car and setup so I was hoping to get recommendations on tire pressure.
For the summer set (Michelin Primacy 3's) I generally ran 35 psi all the way around. The winter tires are Pirelli Sottozero 3's, size 245/50R-18. The max pressure indicated on the sidewall is 51 psi. Right now I have them at 38 psi. What would you guys recommend I run these at? Thanks for the help! |

I'd do 34. . .max . it will be a harsh ride much higher especially if sno-tires.
But question . . what is your TPMS set to alarm at ? time to reset ? remember you'll loose pressure as the temp goes down.

I was running mine at 36 on my previous car, but on the x3 I would not go over 35 even 32 for the fronts by the sticker on the door frame.

I typically go +2 over the door sticker all year round. As noted above, the pressure will change according to temperature, about 1 PSI for every 10F degrees. If you're regularly checking and adjusting your tire pressures then you'll compensate for that.
The temperature here is forecast to be in the upper teens/low 20s overnight on Friday. I predict that a number of TPMS systems will alarm on Saturday morning. |

and to avoid a lot of up and down air pressure, you can always go nitrogen.

I have just set my winter Run Flat 18" tyres to 2 bar (29 PSI) all round as stated on the door plate. I have been doing this for the past 3 years on this X3 and they are Pirelli Sottozero size 245/50R-18. Have been doing this for the last 15 years on BMWs recommended door plate figures with no undue driving characteristics or adverse tyre wear.
