On my 20d I get around 30mpg with it off when I am using it for lots of sub 10 miles journeys, and around 38mpg with it on. All that time while your car is sitting in traffic, at junctions etc. doing 0mpg brings your average down through the floor. I dropped from 44mpg average to 38mpg average over the winter too, it is now starting to creep back up again. |

I have a 28i. I have two interesting parts of this puzzle:
1) For 10 tankfuls of gas, the trip computer shows 24.5 mpg average, but using manual odometer/pump gallons shows 23.2 mpg. I've seen the same sort of discrepancies on my Audis and Infinitis. I've read endless discussions on this, and I have yet to hear a good explanation. The cynical part of me thinks the auto makers are deliberately skewing the displayed mpg. There was some hints of this when I compared it to the results from an external scanner app to the OBD port on my Audi A5. 2) Based on the trip computer, I get about 17-19 mpg for street driving with light to heavy traffic at up to 45 miles/hour. I get 28.0 for steady highway driving at 65 to 75 miles/hour. In the summer, these drop about 10% due to A/C. |

2014 X3 28i Gas Mileage
I've had my X3 for about 3 months. Most of my driving is city. I've tried to keep it in economy mode most of the time and I've been getting 16 mpg. Was expecting much more. I thought the specified mpg (21 mpg) was an average of economy & comfort. Anybody got clues? Going to ask the service to check it out next time I'm in.

When you say city, what sort of traffic?
Is there lots of junctions? Getting the car to move gobbles the most fuel, sitting at a standstill is 0MPG. Are you using premium fuel? I have to try and remember what you guys have fuel wise, we have Ron and you have Octane. The x28i has a knock sensor, you can use 95ron (89 Octane) but it will retard the timing doing so, losing you around 10-15% power and MPG. All figures quoted for power and MPG are using 98ron (93 Octane). Turbo petrols are affected far more than NA engines, my 335i used to lose 30hp when run on 89 Octane instead of 93. We have 2016 28i with just over 16000 miles on it, and average fuel consumption is 21.4mpg. It's a mixed drive with 50/50 city-highway and my wife drives it in sport to work and in eco from. We also had some long trips which accounts for about 6000 miles. We always use 93 octane.

My 2014 28i on very bad traffic is 14mpg. 28mpg on smooth cruise around 70mph. But if I drive in a normal traffic flow in city, I would say 22mpg.
I am going to replace with non run flat tires which are much lighter. Will let you guys know the result. |

Same as above. 24 mpg (calculated from pump volume, not computer. (FYI, Computer says 25.8. Yeah, right) with 70% highway miles. Hwy mileage at 70 mph is 28 mpg. Premium fuel.
As for the arguments about which is more "accurate", the computer or the hand calc, the answer is simple. I pay for the gallons at the pump. I drive the miles on the odometer. My wallet says the mpg is based on that. |
