strange corrosion on the all 4 Alloys

We noticed a strange corrosion or some sort on the all 4 Alloys wheels of our 2011 X3, all wheels effected arroundit the BMW log cap.

Very strange and pretty disturbing too! picture below.
Any one with the same experience or know of similar problems with X3 alloys?

Thanks for all your support folks.

They are painted silver, the paint is coming off for some reason. Either poor prep in the factory or some chemicals have damaged the paint or it's being abraded somehow,

Corrosion on wheels & badges....

We had similar issues with my wife's 2011 X3 SE, wheel style 308. I complained to the dealer, pictures were taken and sent to BMW, I heard yesterday that we will receive 4 new wheels under warranty. Fair outcome.

Incidentally about 6 months ago all external badges on the car, with exception of bonnet/hood, were also changed under warranty (BMW badges on rear/trunk door, wheel centre hubs, x-drive badges on both front doors) due to bubbling & discolouration. Once again they were changed immediately and without dispute.

Otherwise a great and trouble-free car.

They can be repainted. We had a couple of wheels on our 2011 with significant rock chips and a curb scrape. I paid around $170 each to have them repaired/repainted, certainly a LOT less than the cost of a new wheel. They look good and seem to be holding up fine.

True, I am sure this can fixed, but I need an answer as to why this is happening to low mileage 3 year old car in to be known as one of the mildest climate on earth, no salt on our roads during winter, the temperatures always average, 10c in winter, 15 to 20 if lucky during summer.
I need to get down to the cause, is only down to bad paint job from factory, because if down to other factors, the new applied paint may not last a 2nd time around, just like 1st time.

I guess the issue maybe with the batch of the Y spoke style 308 8Jx18, since yours are the same style and year, beautiful option, hope BMW will exchange them for new ones.

I too had the exact same issue with the rims on my '11. All 4 rims were covered under warranty and replaced @ 42,000 miles.

no clue as to what caused the corrosion. The SA said the rims were sent to Germany for analysis. I find that a little hard to believe, but whatever.

Thanks for the feedback, our warranty expired last Feb so I am hopping this is not an issue, on the basis this is a known issue with 2011 models.

Bmw has been known to "good faith" some out of warranty issues. if you have a good relationship with them, ask them about it, if you get the feeling they are being wishy-washy about covering the rims.

also out of warranty....

Martin, just noticed that you are also in Ireland, maybe it's the weather!

My wife's X3 was 2 months out of warranty although I had pointed out the corrosion a few months earlier and agreed to keep an eye on it. I deal with Keary's BMW in Cork and as mentioned the wheels were replaced without major discussion. I've had a good few BMWs and generally find the BMW warranty approach (and Keary's approach) to be very reasonable.

Had exactly the same problem with the Y spoke 18" wheels except corrosion more widespread, they were replaced after a year.
Now same problem again (in under a year on the replacements) around the centre of wheel just as shown on photo of earlier post. Went to dealers yesterday and now going to replace under warranty again next week.
I asked if this was going to be an annual event, they siad BMW were aware that there was a manufacturing problem and should be sorted on the new ones- time will tell!

just got mine checked out by the local dealer whilst it was in for MOT, replaced all 4 wheel caps including the xdrive badges on the sides.. (all quite minor with just a couple of spots i would say) had some on the xline trim around the windows as well so on backorder to be replaced under warranty.

so far car's been quite reliable over the past 3 yrs, only problems were autofold mirrors and car battery that had to be replaced, both under warranty too

Have the same issue on my 2011 X3 as well. Was in for the VANOS recall today so I asked them to look at the wheels. When I picked up the car they apologized for the inconvenience, but I would need to return the car in a few days to have all four wheels replaced, all under warranty.

My 622M 19inch MSport wheels all have the hub corrosion to lesser or greater degress. The car is just in warranty. The dealer has looked at it and reckons it needs 4 wheels and the roundels all have blisters too. They have to go through he BMW process so the car is booked in later this week for a full evaluation. I've been warned that as one wheel has some moderate kerb rash I might be asked for a contribution for that wheel as it's already cosmetically damaged. Has anyone come across BMW requiring a contribution due to kerb rash?

I had two very slightly kerbed wheels when mine were replaced under warranty (622m) mind you it took 6 months for mine to come after the warranty claim was accepted. I paid no contribution towards it.

If all four wheels have the same corrosion problem then why should one wheel which also has kerb rash require a contribution? You're not replacing it because of the kerb rash, you're replacing it because of the manufacturing defect.

This has been extensively discussed in another thread.

What you all have is creep corrossion, due to too thin layer of laquer att sharp bend - often at center cap. Humidity - existing in "mild" Irish climate? - will creep under/into paint and cause corrossion. My 19 year old SAAB AERO rims also affected.

BMW know about he problem, and rims from various suppliers are more or less affected. Suppliers will pay most of the cost, so BMW "generous" - but no official "outer limit".

I had one of my 20" 310M rims exhanged after two years. Minute corrossion.

I agree....I believe the dealer was just being super cautious by warning me. Hopefully it won't need a strong discussion.
