I'd appreciate if people could post their service invoice if possible. I have my car in the garage for "the clunk" and they just called to say it's "normal". Yeah right.
On mine, with power steering off (car not started) turning the steering left+right clunks pretty loudly. I told them they just had to google "steering rack f25" but apparently, they can't google of course ;-)

My SA emailed me saying that they had replaced the front left tie rod today and the clunk was still present. They ordered a new steering rack. Fingers crossed.
This had been bugging me since day 1, but if you have the clunk it's a live able situation. |

After almost two years from when I took delivery of my X3, I had the steering rack replaced last week. The clunk noise seems to have gone and hopefully it will remain as it is. I am saying this since this is the second time the steering rack has been replaced and the first time round the noise returned after just a few weeks. This steering should be a redesigned version though.
I am not impressed with the service I received from BMW since taking ownership as it had to take almost 2 years to resolve what seems to be a problem with most X3s. |

Same problem with mine - now 3 years old - they replaced some parts. noise its still there but i am going to replace it with a macan next year so wont bother complaining again. Also had a leak on the windscreen washer that went for repairs 3 times! the second time it didnt even leave the court on my dealer. it was a bit funny. there was the car, all washed he gives me the keys and a huge puddle right next to it.

Those with 2011, which part number did they put in?
I had this replaced a year ago and the noise has returned. From realoem, they list five part numbers. A new part is to be launched on 8/2014. Interesting. |

Shudder/vibration at slow speeds
Been reading the thread, I don't have a 'clunk' but I do have a (worsening) severe shudder/vibration making right or left turns at slow speed....
Symptom of the steering rack? anyone experienced anything similar? Jon - 2011 F25 Msport diesel covered 49k. |

I just started getting a shudder at very low speeds that wasn't there previously... it occurs especially if I am, for example, turning right and then adjust a bit to the left quickly.
I had changed to summer tires recently and had not yet re-torqued my wheel nuts and had driven probably 700 - 1000 km since then. I did re-torque the nuts and the issues seems to have mostly gone away. However, I did notice once since retorquing a very small shudder under the same condition. In normal driving, it doesn't come up at all since retorquing my wheel nuts. I have a 2013 35i with 27,500 km so far. I'll be keeping an eye on this and will likely mention at my next scheduled service. I don't seem to get a clunk over bumps that I've noticed, though. |

I had my steering rack replaced for the second time a few weeks ago but the clunk noise has returned even though I was reassured that the 'redesigned' steering rack would solve the problem.
I had the car for 2 years and had this problem since day one. I really don't know what to say or do at this stage. Last edited by Aaqui; 05-30-2014 at 09:19 AM.. |

Had my rack replaced a few months ago (see above posts) and a different, low speed clunking has surfaced.
Took it into the dealer, replicated the sound, they put it on the rack, tightened some components, and the noise went away, for about a weekend. Now she's back in, had the noise since the beginning of my ownership of the vehicle. Will follow up with details. Cheers Chris |

Received the third generation rack in June of 2013. Noise reappeared this past winter. The 5th generation rack is on order: 32-10-6-864-491. Should be installed next week. Will advise.
Maybe 5 is a charm? |

walendvay - any update. Did the replacement fix the problem. My wife's 2011 X3 has the same problem and she took it to the dealer who could not duplicate it, and tried to tell her she was imagining things. We have an appointment with another dealer to look at it (car is CPO) and will ask them to replace the rack with the new redesigned one.
Would appreciate the name of the dealer and any details you can provide to help me negotiate with mine - |

Car is in the shop as we speak. There are two ways to duplicate the noise.... 1. Turn the steering wheel back and forth with the car off. You'll hear the clunk. 2. Drive over a speed bump only with the left tire. Then do it with the right. I drove with the tech and that sealed the deal.
Local dealer says I am the only one in town to report the issue. I live on a mountain road with washboards. Will report when I get the car back later this week. Note, loaner car is a '14 x3. No noise. Hope this helps.... |

Got the F25 back today. So far, the 5th generation rack seems quiet (using the speed bump test).
Hope 5 is a charm. My warranty is about to expire and I don't think I'll stomach paying $2300 for another steering rack down the road. Good luck all..... |

Shouldn't be a problem there's a 2 year warranty on replacement of defective/failed parts and repairs.

Hi X3Bimmer,
I have a 20d from Nov 2012 so a '13 model. I have had the steering rack also replaced. This was due mainly to the knocking sound when the car was switch off and you turned the steering wheel. |
